I just love how everyone is adapting this challenge to fit their needs!
Okay, I'm going with my first intention, which was getting rid of paper. 40 pieces is too much, and 4 is not quite enough, so I'm going with 10. I'm not counting things I normally throw away right away, like junk mail or obvious garbage--I'm counting the box of old, unsorted paper I recently found, paper on my 2 desks, articles that I'm intending to read, and paper in my files that can be purged.
By having these different kinds of paper I can make sure I can do 10 pieces a day--on busy days I'll find easier things. on other days I can do things that need more time.
And, maybe it'll help the habit part of this too, because if I can get in the habit of working a little bit a day on things that accumulate on my desk, they will remain at manageable levels going forward.
I will also try to report back a couple of times a week.

My lent challenge, , to do some washing up each day. I don't have to finish the whole lot in one go, but with luck it will keep the pile from accumulating.. Started this evening, and most of it is done and drying in the rack now,

H2H, I am on vacation this week, and I know exactly what you mean. I can spend hours doing nothing... Then I realize that it's getting dark out...

So today is day one for me as it is Wednesday the 1st of March where I am.
So far I have pulled out 10 brand new unopened toys that were either
a) given to my children for Christmas and are not needed or not age appropriate, or
b) bought and put away to give as birthday gifts to my children's friends and then forgotten or not needed
I have battled with the temptation to put them on a local Buy Sell and Swap site but for the amount they are worth and the hassle it is ridiculous and I can't be bothered which is why I haven't done that before now. For some reason I feel bad about donating them. It's not that I don't want someone else to have them or that I'm attached to them. I think it's just admitting to myself that although money is always tight, I have wasted a lot in my attempts to save money. I would have bought them all cheaply with the plan of saving money at a later date when I needed toys to give as gifts, but instead it is just waste and I am ashamed of it. While I keep them I can tell myself that I will give them as gifts or sell them one day but the reality is that one day will never come. So keeping them for longer doesn't help with the guilt and I am taking them out to the car and will drop them in at a local Opportunity Shop today. That way, at least someone who needs them might get to enjoy them.
So that's 10 items donated today. I'm two ahead of schedule.

you nailed it... I decided after my poor experience even with Freecycle (flakes, weirdos, and people who complain when they show up!) easier to put in car drive to any thrift accepting donations. he money is wroth far less than my peace.

I'm proud of myself because I took my 10 toys straight to the Salvation Army and dropped them off. Usually I'd keep items to donate hanging round the house, or in the car, waiting until I get a bigger load together, and then the kids might find them and get them out and ...... But this time they're gone.

Now that I know better, I do better.” You have taken a huge step in being honest with yourself about the toys---one of the best things about this group is the concept of giving yourself amnesty.

Good for you haywire! Tell yourself you did the best you could at the time you bought them, and then don't give them another thought. You are moving forward, not looking backward!

Woo hoo I'm on haywirehousekeeper's schedule? What time zone are we in, anyway? I thought it started today, so I guess it did.
I've been working many hours a day on the house, and taking stuff to donate/consign quite regularly, and I'm running out of stuff. The next area to work on is the office. I have a LOT of paperwork to file--as in I haven't filed since I've moved here over two years ago. Ahem. But 40 pieces was daunting, even 10 felt like too much, so I've decided on four a day.
That seems annoyingly doable.
As in, I really don't have an excuse not to deal with four measly pieces of paper.
So, I did them tonight. Even though life happened today. And I even went way beyond four things, I did some much needed "un-stash and dash" from when my guest was here this weekend, and we needed the DR table (my "desk").
SMALL THINGS: copied consignment info into paper calendar add calendar to purchase list (yay new notebook!)--toss paper torn out from calendar this month put vital records hanging file back put old passports away in it put namechange in it put cc's copied in it
BIG THING: brought tabletop file back sorted through it first and went through the top layer of paperwork in my office to retrieve "current" papers found a little box to put current biz cards in found an inbox to designate for "scrapbook" papers and went through the top layer of paperwork in my office to retrieve scrapbook stuff

OK - I started off easy. I picked up 40 papers/pieces of "schmutz" up off the floor. I was running late and I had to hurry - so I counted even the smallest fuzz. The hallway looks so much better and it only took a minute or so. I think I can do it again tonight.
I am trying to figure out what to do at work - maybe 4 mins tackling the pile of papers?

hannah Thanks for the Maya Angelou quote. Love it too. Yep, Amnesty is great! (So many of us here at SooS need to learn how to stop being so critical of Ourselves. Especially, now during Lent, which is about Forgiveness.) p.s. My report for Day 1 (today) will come later, tonight; it's only 6:38 am here.

Good morning ohblondie and everyone else! We've got a blizzard here this Ash Wednesday. March is in like a lion...and will hopefully go out like a lamb. Indoor work is on the itinerary!
I've got one item put into the Lent box; a cat knick-knack. But I'm thinking I will up the Lent ante, and also find one book a day to donate, for a total of 40 books and 40 non-book items. The library (former bedroom) is one of the remaining rooms I still need to deal with and removing one book a day will get me in there and (maybe) started. Books are also a very hard thing for me to part with -- so this will be good practice. I have to downsize them, they are stacked everywhere in the library and have taken over one fairly large bookcase in my bedroom as well.
Wishing us all an inspiring time of Lent. May we use this time to gain the inner strength and clarity that Easter, with its promise of renewal and resurrection, holds out.
I'll likely report weekly or so.

Forgiveness: I forgive DH for all of his wrongs, I forgive myself for overeating and allowing my house to get cluttered, allowing the improvements on the house to be astonishingly behind. Now that all that is out on the table...I'm going to get busy!
