I am much better today in letting go the dress weight and jumper fabrics,I NEVER wear dresses, I might sew a tunic or top, a vest, but these fabrics, while being colors I LOVE, are just too formal, no give, and I would feel more guilty to cut them up and waste half, and not finish the project.
I may go to a few stores and see what is available I can buy and be done, for the FUTURE, then just donate these fabrics. I have too many clothes already that I may never wear out!

Are there such a thing a COTTON only moths??? Spiders? boll weevils from Alabama???
I took out various fleece fabrics, and all cotton fronts, and a few had large holes chewed thru along the fold lines ..NO mice dropping or any sign of urine which is ALWAYS left, and NO odor from same.
UPDATE- it is hours later and I am mentally tracking the history and it may have been mice.... 20 years ago, in storage who dun it!!!
I laundered everything and hot dried longer..will cut off the holes sections. CAN'T donate this.
This closet is what is called "bump out" meaning in 1949 the guy who cobbled this home from scratch built a rectangle home ~40' x 32' and they used chifforobes..free standing wood closets then.
But a home can't sell under code and called 'bedrooms' unless there is a closet built in..so they added them. See in quake country I finally saw a 1/8" to 1/4" gap running up along on the GBR where it separated slightly from the original house. oh great.
I caulked in the area, but missed a few spots up high, and I didn't even notice while it was 1/8"...so bugs moved in, and blew in in winter winds.
This is one more issue on selling, may be structural in some way; but NOT an issue if I stay, once repaired sealed right and tomorrow I am vacuuming out all the corners. once I scrub down with disinfectant I can decide to leave alone, place stored items back ( only the ones I know I will keep)
Or I may replace the original clothing rod, and place my seasonal clothing there, coats ( I have NO coat closet anywhere) the large bedding taking up space. Since I don't plan to carpet I can just leave the ply floor alone, paint it, or even lay tiles to fit, no grout.

Have you ever tried those space bags? I've used them to store rarely used bedding. You can even get them so flattened out - you can shove under a bed or dresser. The only downsides I have found is 1) they can be heavy to move; 2) they don't work as well over time so even though technically they can be reused over and over - I wouldn't store something in it that I needed monthly and 3) need a good working vacuum although they have them for travel now where you just squeeze the air out - but once again that requires some strength and mobility. Anyway, my SIL loves them - she is out of the country and buys them in bulk every time she visits. I don't think they will work on storing tile though PC

phoenix cat, yes I do have them, and every other novelty container storage device known to womankind.....the hangers that drop down to hold 6 shirts or pants, the shoe door racks, etc.
The only thing I keep in my bags are suede and leather for sewing projects, and winter sweaters. then I found it is pretty much cold all the time here, so i access sweaters easier in a laundry basket inthe closet.
To me-personally- the bags are an encouragement to save stuff..more stuff to fit in to the space we are in, vs just lighting up the amount of stuff. Have too little closest storage may not be a bad thing... I am looking at the many empty shelves in the long bank of kitchen cupboards up and down.
I just donated a lot of dry foods, and a LOT of kitchen stuff-crockpots, turkey pans, big strainers, on and on to the Vet center ..there is no reason not to place Christmas decorations up high, clothing not needed (maybe use those bags) and store books and needed paper or tax files out of site .
As one person who uses mostly all fresh food in a refrigerator plenty big enough, doesn't need a set of dishes for 12, or even 4... with just 6 cups and glasses not 27, then I am keeping everything low (I'm short) and storing all the other non food stuff up higher...
PS here is a good use for this inexpensive shoe bag racks that hang on doors...
Saw a batchelor once who put his books in the kitchen cupboards, it was brilliant..no dust!

TODAY.. I am facing the GBR with blinders, just grab a bin, tote, open and dig in..sorting papers to recycle, 2005 taxes and docs to save, color sample cards, a book on Dancing with CATS, some solar info..THEN...
A saved addressed envelope from my best friend's DIL from 2006 led me by almost a miracle to my oldest friend in CA since 1982... I feared she had passed, at age 75 now.
I can COPE with anything in that room today!!! My tears are happy ones today.
One large Christmas stuff bin had a string of those 1960s "bubbling candle" outdoor lights..half glow...I don't care..I adore them, they were left HERE in the home when I moved in, a bit of history from a 68 year old cottage. You can buy modern copied ones too. hmm may add to the mix, and put them up this holiday!
I can't get to cleaning the dead bugs, and pulling paneling off in closet YET..still working on fabric piles to donate.
Think I NEED to go to fabric store, see what is avail that I can also LOVE, buy in FUTURE if i want, and then pass these on..or maybe save 2-3 of so many brand new folded yards of many colors.
I laundered my 1970 size 6 mini dress that I dated DH in!!! It is egg yolk yellow with huge purple pansy flowers all over and a flirty little skirt ..I can't believe I was that SMALL... ever! I will photo- then donate, and just let it go....along with 2 others I have saved for 30 years and more.
ONWARD!

phoenixcat, yes she is the one who will get it as a donation, I am doing pretty well on "letting go" now.
unfortunately a pink cordon hippie dress, and another silky long dress I made in 1971 got burned thru the shoulder , and the other thru the knee area, like the other quilt fabrics in one particular box I had stored I think Angela gave the clue on what caused it. it had to be chemicals, dang.

OK getting past the NEW PILES all over the living room of clothing and fabrics sorted to donate..fighting sneezy cold, GBR now has huge bin of half emptied papers... just closed the door on the GBR yesterday..not able to face going in.
Will focus on bagging and binning the LR today.
Gritting my teeth that creating a LR "staging area" to help GET RID of stuff is a PROCESS ..<<<must prevail>>>>

I have tiptoed back into the GBR...and finally got the fabrics I AM keeping- for now- into a bin, now need to find and wipe down the lids.
Another bin has boiled wool and small project pieces which are under consideration for later (good likelihood of USING them, that's why) all can be stored in the cleared MBR closet for now.
I went outside to dry my hair in the sun, and read for a bit..saw the ugliness of the insulation foam that went all over in the wall gap where the closet add-on is "departing" from the building... so went and got 6 tools..never know what works best! The wire brush for cleaning grills worked great to shred and blow away in the wind the aged foam I am embarrassed for the repair guy to see.
Then I see HOW the ants are getting in...up the rainspout, thru the crack, tracking across the vast expanse of 12' room INTO the hall, around the corner, across the FR floor to get the cat treat crumbs..oh my. OK sprayed them inside and out.
If there is NO way to address the issue of full on repair this year I can run caulk up the crack space for winter.. and cope. a serious quake would take this closet off anyway.
Then took my still adorable girly wallpapered cube boxes (held stacked reams of copy paper) I made in 1982...and put ALL the kitchen table display items inside (all winter tones and colors) and THEN stuck the full box onto the top shelf of the kitchen cabinet which I had cleaned last month!!
Hooray..a bit of back and forth between rooms, but I keep going.
REALISED THERE IS NO WAY TO HIRE ANYONE, OR GET A BID EVEN, because the GBR room is just a disaster to too much and will keep clearing out all summer. I would have to do it anyway to have anyone work in there. TWO 8' x4' FULL book cases must be unloaded, and moved out.
A good time to begin donating books and other stuff parked on them.
Made the decision that the MBR will NOT be addressed this year at all..use it as a temp staging area for storage of GBR...face ONE problem/project at a time.
I look forward to living in a house with a BARE rooms... feels good... most people accept you can't fix it all at once, while LIVING there, so "EMPTIED OUT" to me means real progress to address repairs.
Just using/living in the space feels far WORSE..because then I am ignoring reality and responsibility.
