I am stumped.. this could be from a Hoarders TV special mystery episode.
I had 1. 100% cotton 4'x6' cut and sewn quilt fronts 2. 4'x6' cotton blend super thick fleece 3. 4-5 yards, this brown fabric, possibly not cotton at all, NONE in the bin was wool that these ALL come from.
the lid was popped, prolly for years here in my GBR closet, but NO mice in that room ever, no "mouse sign" ever (i.e . Dune "worm-sign" for you SciFi types )
no mice poo, no urine, no smell, nothing but a few dead spiders when I opened it this week.
I wonder if a mouse chewed years ago while they were in storage at a friend's in Bay Area? Originally they were left over quilt fabrics from my craft business and I never noticed this? and just transferred it all, folded, ALREADY CHEWED to new bins HERE in 1997??
I washed it all well, hot heat dry, but I simply won't donate this fabric to the seamstress. I am too embarrassed!!! even to cut off the chewed sections.
I can keep and make the quilt fabrics into cat beds, and use the brown for a jumper/tunic as intended, just work away from the chewed spots..or someday turn my back ....and let someone toss it all. sigh

Hmm, does not look like mice to me. Two things occur to me: carpet beetles, or, there was something on the fabric already, even a little spill of something that could corrode over time?
Mysterious...

angela --all were stored in taped shut cardboard in a friends business attic.
But he blended chemicals for automotive cleaning use DOWNSTAIRS in a very small factory... and nothing else I have was ever affected, more than 30+ cardboard boxes all in the same area in his attic CORNER, NOT over the mixing tanks..which has a lid anyway. no chemicals stored up there I ever recall, and just a wood ladder to access, so no sense in lifting heavy buckets or bags of powdered or raw chemicals up there..but what if? maybe a couple old sacks of caustics just sitting up there touching that one box?
no food touched them.. no hands but mine in folding the fabric up.
this is such a mystery, I may take more pics of the cotton which shows what looks like tiny half moon bites all around in a circle shape..and those "rip" looking holes could be rough tears, but I tried to tear with my hands, no go, it had to be a toothed edge.
A serraged/jagged knife cutting along the box side, and catching and tearing contents ,,but several layers stacked affected..
a nail dragging along the side of the box..again, too many stacked layers of fabrics torn.
"Freddy Krueger" claw hands could cut 4 rows..nah, silly
Deduction POINTS TO CHEMICALS burning thru box side over time, eroding holes in "spots" small and large..not sure how I would have ever missed that!
