I was too embarrassed to just give the long stored silk clothes to the theater seamstress..so I opened the huge "body bag" of silks, took all the printed ones, and put in the gentlest "hand wash" cycle just to see if they came out ok..they did!!
Now I will put in the solid colors ( I was fearful mixing them might bleed colors) and wash all.
And the heavy linen wood-beaded tunic-pantsuit (stunning but never will fit me!!) will get air out for a few days...I go around spritzing "linen" smelling fabreeze type stuff...but actual fresh air and sunlight does more!
The raw silk nubby clothes I don't trust to wash, air for them too. there are at least 50 items in perfect condition!
SAY NO!, YOU GO, TO THE DRESS..HELP!
I am having the HARDEST time letting go of 3 dresses... they are at least 45 YEARS old.... what do they REALLY mean to me?..I thought it out and they represent:
when I was young perfect youth perfect weight perfect health perfect skin perfect opportunity to take life on perfect enthusiasm, and wonder at seeing the world perfectly in love
too much emotion to let them go it feels like!!! Even tho they have been in storage for decades
So I hung them in the LR where I can see them ALL the time..and will see if i CAN donate them after all.
The teeny "Pansy" mini-dress is the hardest of all...
Two others I sewed, both are hippiesh..a long silky ultra feminine Maxfield Parrish type print, (can't think of the actual artist right now) and another I named my "pregnant angel dress" a loose pink cotton, to the floor, that all us girls wore, when we didn't wear miniskirts and hot pants!!
yeah, and I name my clothes!

Wow H2H, that is quite a stash! I can totally see how difficult it would be to let those beautiful hand-made objects go. I know you have so many nice, crafty things that it will be hard to winnow it all down. I guess all I can suggest is to imagine some young seamstress enjoying those fabrics.

The silks ( shown on couch, totes below ) were planned to be cut up into "crazy quilt triangles" style and piece and sew into a long Japanese kimono..heavy raw silk outside, thinner blouses/skirt silk inside, reversible ( if I COULD sew it that well) So washing and lovingly folding and donating ALL of them helps a lot... it's the personal 3 dresses I am still deciding on. I and other "savers" went to the back of the Am. Cancer Society thrift store delivery ramp DAILY (when I was at my worst hoarding) and we took all the good stuff they put out that didn't sell in 30 days.) (Feb 19: takeonestepatatime.proboards.com/thread/29531/back-away-free-stuff)PS Angela..the long silky dress above ALSO has a ragged 'tear' just like the other clothes I posted on, so it seems it was a chemical eating thru over time. it's all I can figure. PIC: FULL 'body bag' of dozens of silk pieces empty bag with just 3 of the totes full of silk, 3 more to fill!!! AND just one couch full of other clothing and some fabric/yardage!!!! whooohooo both couches are covered, and the floor in LR.

Those are lovely. If you can't part with them right now don't worry! You might be able to part with them later after you part with more things that mean less. This has happened to me: I put the items in limbo for a while, went on to something else then came back and was able to deal a little better. Way to go H2H.

Playing devil's advocate here.
How long have you had this silk?
How long have you had the clothes?
If you were going to use them or wear them, wouldn't you have done so.
Could you be living in the space they occupy?
Can you thank them and let them go?

if you released them, what could they become? Is there any white, ivory, pale pink or blue? Volunteers use the pastels to make tiny frocks for premies who don't live. Quilts of Valor makes quilts to thank servicemen. Costume departments at universities and community theatre, love vintage clothing. How many smiles could your stash give to others?

H2H, I have made many tiny gowns and blankets. It is a blessing to be able to meet this need. It is sad, but it's also uplifting. I didn't mean to upset you, it's a service opportunity that is close to my heart.

h2h - If you are giving away bags and bags of fabrics that once held your dream todos, there is no harm in keeping 3 pretty frocks that have your heart singing. Its all about the balance of releasing and keeping, or as someone (elsewhere) once said You can keep anything you like, but you can't keep everything.

And besides, you can always release the other 3 later. I have found it often takes me several culls before I finally let something go. Its good if it can be a one and done process, but it doesn't have to be.
