I've found I am more motivated to keep up energy level for chores on Saturday by turning on the cable music called "60s revolution" and rocking out the kitchen clean up and stuff sorting!
The upbeat songs and flowing memories are a nice change from the daily calming new age stuff I listen to.
But the wearing old clothes and just not caring? is that wisdom of age or societal disconnect? hmmmmm
Partly it's living rurally, everyone is so casual (flannel and jeans) or tie dye and organic Guatamalan fabrics, the cotton harvested and woven by barefoot virgins by the cycle of the moon, of course. (not kidding)
It's not I don't DESERVE better, I do value myself, I make an effort to always shower, wear clean clothing, wash hair, maybe a dash of makeup slapped over age spots...but I frankly don't care!
When I vist SF and see the sleek over dressed silicon valley workers I feel like a 'plain brown baked potato'.
In NYC they get up at 4am to layer and accessorize, I swear. But the worst was being in Las Vegas one NYE...in the ladies bathroom of some grand casino there were these 6' tall Columbian beauties, impossible bodies in tight, costly Italian sheaths, the "come F me" heels, tons of black hair cascading, the eyes, the jewelry, it was overwhelming to see that 'level' of femininity...wow. Those drug lord babes were making the most of their 20's. But the price?
the older i get the less I care...you are the age you are. I see the silliest affectation on FB with HS friends always commenting to each other...all wrinkled grey haired selves " why you never age!" I call BS on that as Marcel the shell says.
OK off to make things happen!

I'll "fix up" when I need to, but on an everyday basis, no, I don't care anymore and its not because I don't care about myself, its because I DO care about myself. I had to do the clothes, the hair, the make up for many years to be, for lack of a better term, compliant. Its what society expected and what I had to do career wise, but never because I enjoyed it. Its a privilege for me not to have to jump through all those hoops and by golly, its one I'm gonna take advantage if and enjoy!

five cat..you said it better than me on the clothing et al. Pantyhose (does anyone wear them now?), heels, suits, coif all went out the window when I began working for myself and dressing much more Bohemian.
The best part was controlling my TIME and sleep, I hated early to work routines, and love the phrase "Real success is getting 8 hours of sleep no matter what time you went to bed"
went thru a phase of sleeping in very very late for several years, now I seem to wake naturally much earlier, but still not the "begging to sleep in to 7 am feeling had every morning in business.
and I kicked *** on clearing off my kitchen table for the first time in 2 years!! ..totally without a thing on it for 24 hours until I decide what exactly will go on there... and did laundry, l ran the DW, grocery shopped in two stores, and had a luxurious nap with cuddly cat in the crook of my arm.

I have to dress somewhat nice/professional for work. I don't get up at 4am to preen and layer. I get up at 5:30 to catch the 6:30 bus though...
On weekends it is leggings, sweatshirts or tshirts, sneakers or sandals (depending on the weather). I am trying to make sure I don't get too sloppy in case I have to run out.

you bet "sista" imamess!!!
the downside of this was going to bank for a small loan, wearing a loose bohemian dress, and I was turned down flat..so much for small town support of small business.
I learned to dress like my audience, talk like them ( slow down with bankers, speed up with lawyers and artists) basically the "mirror" them trick works all the time!
I DO however go get gussied up upon first meeting with anyone.
But around here as I said anything like a nice blouse and bracelet AND earrings is commented on as ' why are you dressed up?' we have an actual word for it "Humboldt Honey" -uncombed casual hair, no makeup, doesn't shave anywhere, jeans, flip-flops or sandals with heavy sox, or boots, has a baggie of pot on her somewhere.

Oh, I dress up sometimes too, but only in pants now. I never intend to wear a dress or skirt again. A 10 inch scar in my abdomen with a hernia in the scar took care of that, and I'm overweight to boot. My days are spent mostly in carpenter's jeans & t's or sleeveless t's & shorts in the summer. Foot surgery some years ago has made my large feet almost impossible to fit in women's shoes, so I wear men's hikers that don't make my feet hurt.
I don't care for pot, I'd rather have a drink of good whiskey. That only happens only on rare occasions now, usually when I can't sleep at all.

"The Graduate" this is the 50th YEAR of the film from i1967 and it is soon in theaters I think. How many here remember it? or lived during the period? The message I got from it besides the shocking ( for THEN) activity of the adults.....is that she and he rushed into marriage! ..and at the LAST scene we see them on the bus, but nothing to talk about, nothing in common..thus recreating the empty marriage of their parents. Most young people NEVER got that part ..just admired him fighting normalcy..it was protest for no valid result. I am reading "Revolutionary Road"-- a movie made very well, and accurate to the book which was a stunning indightment of modern life in the 50s, how entrapping marriage was for young people who felt they must conform. ( POSTED on it in Gratitude list on 4/4) Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet www.imdb.com/title/tt0959337/All this led to misery, drinking, more misery and introspection..and kids to raise too. The writing is SO GOOD, the inner turmoils and desire to lead a life not tied to conformity..yet not knowing how, too scared to proceed. More women turned to alcoholism during this period, and my own DH's mother was a dancer, and a bit of a free spirit...drank herself to death trapped in a marriage with a very stern responsible man (my FIL) She had 3 babies..the third he never wanted, maybe not the 2nd either..to punish her he took a second job after work from Standard Oil corp, to some accounting job, to support them all, and she never saw him. He drank all weekend too. She died early still raising young teens and it severely affected all 3 kids for LIFE. So the book Revolutionary Road exactly mimics the real life I saw for my DH's family!!

Putting on clean pajama pants, a t-shirt and flip flops doesn't count as dressed? SHHHHHHHHHHHH! I won't tell if you don't.

I never did like conformity. I don't think it's good for the health.

imamess : A 10 inch scar in my abdomen with a hernia in the scar took care of that, and I'm overweight to boot. << wow, my twin? I am living with a "surgical deformity" a massive ventral hernia caused by the emergency gall surgery in 2011 that left me with a 9" scar from breastbone to bellybutton...I complained as it grew for 3 years to the awful NP who is gone from the VA, and no one else explained what would happen (40% of all abdomen surgeries result in this later!!!)
Now I look like an extremely pregnant 68 year ofd woman..I can't wear 80% of clothes, one reason for the rags..only wearing what I have, not buying new 'maternity' clothes, and being overweight already I am under the gun to lower my BMI before surgery..scary as hell because severe pain, long term healing up to a year later, foreign mesh inside me, etc etc etc. as a medical surgery tech i KNOW what goes on in this type surgery. so the aded pressure to clear up the house when I need to hire a care worker after? yep that motivates.

H2H They don't give a care about the dangerous weight I gained from taking psychiatric medications either. Apparently "being fat isn't the worst thing in the world." Meanwhile I end up in tne ER due to hypertension. Riiiight, that's not supposed to be a problem?
