Hello All I may have visitors one day over the Easter weekend (just for the day, not overnight). I am used to having mad panic hide-everything, scrub-everything big cleans before people come over. However, thanks to this board, my house is currently in a far better state than the end-point of one of those panic cleans and I realise I have no idea what a normal pre-visitor clean looks like. I'll be in work every day before they come so I won't have much time to prepare during the week. What should my priorities be the evening/morning before they arrive? Currently, I'm thinking: Empty rubbish bins/compost bin Clean toilets Wipe sinks Do washing up Quick vacuum round Make sure settees and kitchen work-surfaces are clear Open the curtains Prepare food and drink Anything else?

When expecting guests:
I sweep/vacuum/mop floors Clean bathroom and hang guest towels Clean kitchen, set/decorate table Make beds (IMHO, If the bed is made, the bedroom is "good enough") Hide any laundry behind closed laundry room door. Prepare food in advance if possible.
At the last minute, I always have to bathe and groom a Small Bad Dog

Congrats on being in maintenance to allow you a stress-free visit!!!! Your list looks very good. If possible, I'd do most of the dusting and vacuuming the day before. Then in the AM work on the kitchen (dishes, counters, last minute food preps), bathroom (swish and swipe) and garbage out. Also I make sure it is well stocked with toilet tissue, soap and fresh towels. Make beds, clean up after any pets.
And take time to relax and savour some peace before company arrives, maybe in a bubble bath. Enjoy!

I don't worry about laundry for company. Just get it out of sight.

Fivecat, behind a laundry room door??? . I, too, just hide mine. It's not horribly behind, but there's always something that needs to be out of sight.

Remember they are coming to visit you not your house!

Hello MinervaLove what you are doing working "along" in your house. The fact that your house is already at your normal "panic clean" state speaks volumes. Sending you good cleaning vibes for the rest. One thing I do because I don't know if my home stinks or not to strangers (or anyone) is to get one of those oil plug- ins. I had one going one time...it was a delicious fragrance that actually changed to another and then switched back on it's own. It made the party extra festive.Like music for your nose.

I have to interject a little word of caution here: Do not "scent" your house unless you are *certain* that your visitors don't have asthma or some other kind of breathing issues. My family and I have to leave stores, hotels/motels, and homes that are scented. We simply can't breathe in them!!

P. S. The same caveat extends to candles, too. A.

Oh yes Arid I forgot about that...I've been wanting to try an essential oil diffuser for that very reason.

Thanks for all the advice I don't think I'm quite in maintenance yet. I need to build and consolidate good habits a bit more before I could claim that. However, it's certainly nice to feel I've made progress. I've cleaned my house to this state on many an occasion, but always in a panic clean. This is the first time I've done it slowly, building better habits as I go. It's the first time I have any real hope that it won't all slide back again. The real test will come when I am back to getting home at 10pm every day including the weekend. I just hope I have enough of a routine in place by then to keep it ticking over.

Yikes Minerva You've got a tough schedule. I think your habits and doing things "along" are going to save you in the long run. With me, my chores recently... happen like this: Am: Pull bedding up and the bed is made. Wash dishes while I am preparing food and wipe counters. Leftovers out of fridge when I'm preparing for trash day. Swish and swipe when I'm in the ladies room, It all happens while I'm there and not at some designated time that never happens with me. I hope your company comes over for Easter ...
