Hi guys I'm new here and while I'm still reading up on all the new information I have found I am relieved to find how many others are out there and that I am not alone!!!
My house currently hovers between levels 3 and 4 (toddlers but I know it counts none the less) and my car is at a 2.
I've made numerous promises to myself that I would change but I always "relapse" into the filth. I am determined to change things. My house is majority INFESTED with German roaches, I have rats in my garage, I can't let anyone in my house, and I finally stumbled upon the word squalor today and immediately burst into tears because I knew that was me. That's what this is. It's not just messy. It's not just untidy. It's not even just unsanitary. This is squalor. And we're living in it. And I'm ready to change that. I'm ready to walk through my house barefoot and not cringe and I'm ready to call a god d**n exterminator and not be embarrassed to let them in!
Wish me luck!

On the roaches, have you tried borax? Mix 1 part borax with 2parts cocoa powder and spread very thinly along baseboards. You want the roaches to walk through it so make sure it's a thin layer. It'll take a couple of weeks to see results, so don't get discouraged.

bipolarmamabear, welcome! I wish you the best for you and your house! You can do it! Nothing's impossible, remember that. Take it little by little and you SHALL see the difference. Clean a chunk of an area a time, maintain it, then go on and clean another, keep maintaining both, etc. I totally get your relief for finding the forum, I felt the same when I got here. I am sorry about the frustration that your environment is causing, you can change that!

I'm pretty new here too. Let me tell ya, finding out there were others like me was a HUGE step in regaining my self-esteem. This board helped me through some tough stuff. Look around and see what other folks are going through, and doing to reduce their squalor. When you want help with something specific, post about it. You'll have advice and encouragement here, judgment free. Welcome!

Having just come from a roach situation myself... try bombing and spending the night away from your house with your children and animals in tow... try doing this a couple times... once home again focus on cleaning.. or you can clean and work on maintenance then once in maintenance mode, do a bombing precursory to calling an exterminator in?

If you can take everything living out follow the instructions for safety sake and set off roach bombs then clean up the corpses then call an exterminator. Any living roaches will eat the dead bodies so you want to get rid of them!
You will find bodies everywhere but there are more. Getting them under control is a priority because they can cause severe breathing problems!
They eat paper and glue so if you can get rid of any cardboard and excess paper!!!
Exterminators have seen everything don't be embarrassed to call be embarrassed if you stay in the same situation. Make the call for yourself and the children's sake. You deserve a pest free home. I say this from a place of love and having had a severe infestation.
It took over five years for us to get rid of them. In my case we put everything in a storage unit that wasn't climate controlled and reached 140 inside. I had sprayed every box with roach spray then raped all the seams and cracks and left everything in that hot storage for three months. Everything died!
I unpacked every box outside and cleaned everything before it came back in my new place. This was during my divorce.
I haven't had a roach since.
Until the exterminator comes you can mix sugar and borax and place in cracks, crevices out of reach of children and pets. Focus on your kitchen especially under and behind the appliances.
