I just turned 50. My life has been very difficult for the past several years. I've lost job after job. I rarely leave the house except to work and my house is so filthy I'm scared I'm going to be put on the street. I don't know what to do. I have no family or friends and I've got my landlord coming into my house in 3 days to check some plumbing issues. I'm really horrified. Don't really know what else to say except, I wasn't always like this. In my 20's I kept an immaculate home. People would stop by at any given time and I'd gladly welcome them in. I will not even allow anyone in my house now. it's completely out of the question. I simply don't know what to do. There's nowhere to start and I've got got so little time....Well, thanks for taking the time to read this.

Tony welcome to the group. You will find you are not alone. This group is a great source of support.
My advice is just to start. Pick up one piece of trash. Wash one dish. Don't try to do everything all at once.
Can you post pone your landlord's visit?

Hello tony! You can do this! Do you have a trash bag in the house? Take a break from the computer, and see how fast you can fill it up! Then come back and post about it and we will cheer you on. You really can do this. You have amnesty- amnesty from recycling, from repairing, from reading, from donating. Just toss it, you are more important and you deserve a clean space. Go on, you can do it!

Many hugs! Get a trash bag and fill it, take it outside to the dumpster or a trash can, take a break, drink water, repeat. Just focus on clearing path to rooms with plumbing. Shut the doors to other rooms. You can do this!

tony I'll be 50 in August. I'm so sorry you have had a difficult time. I believe you can make a big difference in your apartment in only 3 days. I think most of us at one time or another have had a huge mess to face and clean up in a big hurry. Take out the kitchen garbage and then fill it up again with trash take it out. Gather up all of your dirty clothes...put them in your car if you have to go out to wash them anyway. Do your dishes. Store pans in the oven if they are not going to look in there. Maybe you can sweep the kitchen floor one day and then mop it the next. If you work on it you will be just fine.

If you have a bad case of indecision, make a (short) list of things you need to do, number them, throw a dice and do the task associated with that number. This might help you getting started. Because in the end it doesn't matter where you start, but that you start.

Plumbing issues are specific. That's good. Can you start in the room with the plumbing and work backwards? Bag 'em and tag 'em- toss the garbage bags and label and stack the boxes. You just need to clean the necessary-to-access spaces and can block off the rest. Use curtains, sheets, whatever. Put on your favourite music and dive in- you can do this!
If all else fails flu that has you glued to the bathroom is always highly contagious and takes 2 or 3 days to clear up. It happens Saturday mornings at the most inconvenient times sometimes. An it will give you an extra day or two of cleaning if you're panicking.
Check back in if you like- someone is always reading.

Hi Tony, I'm sorry to hear you've had such difficult times in the recent past, and like a lot of us, you've gotten overwhelmed with the housekeeping. We all know how you feel, and sympathise.
If your landlord is coming to check out your plumbing, as others have said, your best option is to do a little bit before he or she comes. Even a little bit will show your landlord that you're working on your place, and help a lot. Since it's plumbing your landlord's coming to check out, perhaps close the doors to the other rooms for now. Take everything out of your kitchen sink and bathroom sink, putting the stuff in garbage bags if it needs throwing out anyhow, and scrub the sinks. That will be a good start. You can do it!
Keep coming back, we are all behind you and wishing you all the best.
Welcome.

hi tony - welcome to the group! you couldn't find a better place and people. so; i notice you haven't posted in awhile. is everything ok? did the LL come? i was thinking that if you have a therapist, you can get a letter from them to LL about the depression and LL may give you more time to get things cleaned up. Please come back and let us know how you are; we care. you can do this one step, one thing, at a time. start with trash. wash one dish. if the sink is full, use the tub... etc.
