Hello. I'm from Puerto Rico. I've been a hoarder since 2011 and a messy person since childhood. I'm desperate. Already contacted a local organizer and she never called me back after answering my e-mail. I went to a psychologist years ago and never tackled this issue as she's not an expert. I don't want to keep living around garbage and roaches, I want a life. I would like to get support because I know I can't do this by myself. Thanks for reading.

Hello gina!
You've come to the right place, all of us have issues we're working on. It helps a lot to be able to work along with and talk to people who understand what you're going through. We have work-along threads, there are some chat options, and/or you can start a blog to report what you're doing.
The important thing is to make small goals--if you look at the entire job it will seem impossible. The concept of taking baby steps has helped me so much.
If you tell us more about your situation no doubt many people can relate and give you advice, if you want it. For example: Are you in a house or apartment? Live alone or with others? Are you home a lot or out working a lot of the time? Do you have problems with keeping too much stuff? Or not being able to clean? Or both?
Welcome to the site!
Diane

Hello ginalash Welcome to our group. Sorry you hit those roadblocks to get an organizer and a therapist . It takes a lot of effort to reach out for help and when you don't get it ...it becomes dead ends. I hope you will keep trying to get the help you need. In the meantime, try to do little things like fill a plastic Walmart bag with trash and take outside to the big trash. Then take a break. Just Baby Steps!

Welcome ginalash you are not alone. Im sorry the therapist and organizer didnt help. Hoarding is a difficult issue to tackle but its not impossible. What kinds of things do you hoard? Do you compulsively shop or "dumpster dive"? Stopping the flow of things coming in is a great way to start. It makes it easier to see progress as you work on the house.
Acknowledging that you have a problem is a first step to working through it. The fact that you no longer want to live with garbage and roaches is a great motivator to getting the mess cleaned up. From personal experience, i will say that feeling will wax and wane, its part of the process. Use that feeling as much as you can. You deserve a clean uncluttered living environment!
Start small with baby steps. Do you have pets? Cleaning up human and animal messes are the first priority. Then focus on food trash. Even getting a small bag out is cause for celebration so be sure to post your accomplishments, no matter how insignificant they may seem to you. Those tiny baby steps add up. Alot of clutter is from deferred decisions, start with the easy stuff. You will strengthen your decluttering muscles are you progress and it will get easier.
Here some dancing bananas to cheer you on!

ginalash - welcome to the group! If you have garbage and roaches, take the baby step of filling one small plastic bag and getting it out of the house. Then come back and tell us about it. When you're overwhelmed, the hardest thing to do is just start. Make your focus very small, and just do one thing.
