Hello everyone! A long time ago, I used to post on the original Squalor Survivors forum. Years later, as you can see, here I am with the exact same problem plaguing me. Proof that you can clean up the mess a thousand times, but if nothing changes in your life or nothing changes upstairs, then you'll be right back to square one. The last few years, there have been big changes in my life though. I've removed multiple toxic and abusive family members, and started doing things for myself and not feeling guilty about it. I'm almost middle aged, but I'm back at school studying, showing my children that anything is possible. I feel like I'm healthy now. I feel like I'm ready to truly change my life into the one that I've always wanted. I've read some articles online about how many unhealthy items one truly possesses, e.g. plastic toys, plastic dishes, plastic tupperware, etc. and how it can have a significant impact on your health. For some strange reason, something clicked over in my brain, and I thought that's where I'll start! All week, I've been gathering and sorting things and the landing of my stairs is full with bags for donation. I'm really excited about this. I feel good! I can almost see my home as a healthy clutter free atmosphere, even though I have a long way to go. I'm looking forward to hopefully making some cleaning buddies here to keep me company along my journey! 🙂

Welcome back! Sounds like you are ready to tackle the clutter, both in your personal life and the 'stuff' that surrounds and sometimes threatens to drown us.

Hello peace, changing your mindset is the first step and you've done that. Good work on getting the donation bags together, keep working, and keep posting!

peaceandsimplicity - yay for breaking out of toxic relationships! That can be the biggest hurdle and perhaps the hardest. I love your name, and that you're being motivated by health.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes! I chose my name, because that's exactly what I'm hoping to change my life into. 🙂 I can't believe just how great my kids are being with all of this. After explaining to my 8 year old that it's better for our health and the environment to get rid of all these plastic toys that we have, she was all on board. The 2 year old didn't really need any convincing, I just waited until he was asleep and went through his toys. When he woke up, it was like they never were there anyway. Of course, I kept his favourites though. 😁 At the end, the grand total to go to donation was 1 large garbage bag, 1 large cardboard box, 1 medium sized box, and 2 doll houses. I told my daughter that Santa might bring them some nice wooden toys for Christmas. We also agreed that each child is allowed 20 toys each, therefore we don't get into the same predicament as before with too many toys. A group of toys counts as one toy too, example: their wooden train set is one toy. I'm not counting each individual piece, that would be too strict. If they have 20 toys and they want another one, then they have to donate something to make room for the new toy. My husband brought away all the donations to the second hand shop on the weekend and they were delighted to receive them. I'm sure that that our toy hoard will make someone else's Christmas a very happy one!
