Inspired by the "Squalor Is..." thread (thanks, p 204! ), I was thinking about what would be the opposite of "squalor" - you know, the state of our homes (and ourselves) that is our mutual goal. But I couldn't think of the right word for it... ...Tidiness? Cleanliness? Order? Decency? Functionality? Clearness? Clarity? Calm? Tranquility? Serenity? Peace? We are stepping out of squalor, and moving towards.... (please help me fill in the blank)

What's the opposite of "squalor"?
Active caring.
(I put on the other thread "Squalor is ..." that squalor is "neglect")

CL, I embrace your definitions of both squalor and its opposite.
Those are exactly it for me--thank you!

I wouldn't say happiness. I have sometimes been very happy while living in squalor.
I don't know what the opposite is. The closest I can think of is"order", but that's not right. I like "clarity". It's not exactly the right meaning, but I think it captures the feeling for me. -

For me, the opposite of squalor is Simplicity, which brings about a sense of calmness, joy, and peace of mind. Simplicity also causes me to have just what I need and little, if any, more. Things would be simple to store and find. Bills are paid. Receipts are filed for easy reference and can be found in seconds. Clothes are limited in number, therefore easier to put away and find. Laundry is quick and easy, and fewer loads. Meals are planned; left-overs have a planned use; fridge contains fewer items and is easier to keep clean. Needed groceries are on a shopping list; money is saved; fewer trips are made. Ah, yes, Simplicity! It's getting closer with every baby step.
