Hey everyone -- i've been MIA for a few days (maybe longer) but I've been working on my household budget now that dh has turned it back over to me.... (long story there). Anyway. I've been reading a book on budgeting "It only hurts between paydays" which is old, but the principles are still good. As I was reading about how to set up a payment schedule based on when the bills were due and when the money came in I started thinking about how it relates to doing house work. If I get up in the morning and have minimal energy (income) then I should do only the few basic things that are DUE then (shower, get dressed) and later on in the day when I get more energy (income) I can do a few things that can be accomplished later on in the day without causing a problem (like the lunch dishes). But when I don't do anything I end up with MORE and MORE stuff (bills) that not only still need done, but they have "finance charges" (like the crockpot thread --- wiggly things, nuf said, ). edited to add * just finished cleaning several pots that had those "finance charges" in there......This has kinda been mulling over in my brain..... I've never made that kind of connection / analogy before. What do you guys think?

Hmmmm .......... yeah, I get the connection there. I think you're on to something. Make use of the energy/motivation (money) as you get it and be responsible with it. If it's a daily habit to evaluate and allocate, then you won't waste time or money! Good thought!

Great connection. The way we spend our money shows where our heart is. The same can be said for how we spend our time, it shows our priorities.
I will have to work on both budgets.

Ok -- more random thoughts
Utilities: Doing dishes showering taking out the trash picking up after yourself (ETE) daily laundry sweeping/vacuuming regularly
PAST DUE BILLS *mount washmore cleaning out the crock pot from 8 months ago Decluttering the spare room tackling boxes of junk that's been sitting around for months or years
we can't pay those past due bills till we take care of the basic utilities. otherwise we might be out of debt with one thing and in debt with another.... or worse, like the financial budget, something might get "disconnected" (ex. showering -- if we don't do it we drive people away because they don't want to be near us)....

I really like the thought process here! And that older book sounds really good too. I have been making good progress now that I go to Listzilla (daily accountability partners) here and make a to do list each day. I'm getting better at zeroing in on the priorities (daily maintenance "bills due") and digging away at the past dues (junk boxes, shredding etc.) . All thru my de-squaloring I have been realizing how hand and hand this problem is with my "too much credit card debt" issue. I can see where we over-acquired and wasted. It's not fun to see but it is good to register in my brain and be fully aware so that I don't make the same mistakes ever again. Anyway, I just posted to say this is a great thread and I just love the thinking outside the box! Very cool! Thanks comingclean.

I think that makes sense, although I only have big problems with one (housework) and not the other (bills, although I certainly have enough mental hangups about money that what you say rings true!).
This isn't for budgeting, but it helps me a lot with finances - Wesabe.com It's like Mint.com but I like it.
It lets me know exactly where my money goes, as long as I remember what I bought at which store. (Which I can save a reciept if I think I'll forget).
I Wish i could think up a "tool" that would be as easy to use for houselceaning. But I can't tell you what it would be. The pie charts someone posted in another thread might be the right answer.

Inga Rea used to make the most creative visuals of her cleaning sprees. She even had an outline of her house with little piles that would disappear as she cleared them! She did the pizza chart, too. I used it in Listzilla. (Works great to encourage kids, too!)
I have it saved in photobucket, but can't seem to get logged in today. If you just go into paint, you can make any picture and use it to encourage yourself. (It also helps at the end of the day, when you don't remember what you accomplished, and you see it all noted!)
I do like the idea of looking at housekeeping as a logical issue like budgeting rather than this odd conglomeration of chores that I can never get a handle on. And just like putting a little money each month towards old debt will eventually pay it off, so will little 15 minute challenges towards the old mess!

Hmmm... i'm intrigued with the visual thing.... when you can get into photo bucket i would appreciate seeing it cause i can't wrap my mind around the idea right now.

This is one of my cleaning pizza pics. I simply made it in paint, and as you can see it is possible to play around with fonts and colors.

comingclean, you have made a great analogy! In my mind, what you wrote connects with that old saying "A stitch on time, saves nine!"

I like this thread- it makes one think I have noticed that if I have no energy but still start doing a little that my energy actually improves and also if I keep things up - I do not need as much energy for the job as when I leave it not done bills too- if I pay on time then I save both a little money and a lot of worries and gain energy that way too thanks for sharing and I like the responses that has given us all some food for thought which gives us more energy--(wink)
