Check for leaky pipes or a leaky water heater. Bathtubs can leak too - into the walls and create mold.

Well, I figured out what it was - brenda, you called it perfectly. There was a leak in the line running to the dishwasher, and the water was running down the wall and pooling in the crawl space under the house. And in that pool of nasty water, there was some kind of dead animal - maybe a mouse or a vole.
The nasty water and its nasty denizens are gone, and I am running a fan on the wall to dry it out, so I can get a better idea of the damage. The house already smells so much better. Thanks to everyone for your helpful advice - it helped me to move through the process step-by-step and solve out the problem, rather than freaking out.

Drains? The pan under your air conditioner? We discovered our air conditioner was dripping bits of stagnant water only when the technician came to do a biyearly service.
Maybe pet smell spread all over house intensified by seasonal increase in humidity?

Could be a mouse in the wall. Two days ago, my house started to stink, and I can't figure out why.
