For us it's about teaching responsibility which I explain to my daughter daily every time I assign her chores.
I teach by example thus if I want her to be responsible I act responsibly around her.

"The trouble with always leaving yourself a way out is that you always take it." ~ Robert Brault
LostChild, i've often wanted to write a list of things i'm responsible for, and things i'm not, around the house, and make the family stick to it.
For example, in my house it would be:
Mom is responsible for having a washer and dryer, in as good working order as she can keep them, and plenty of detergent around. She is not responsible for washing, drying, folding, or putting away everyones clothes and linens, only her own (and maybe Dad's if he works full time out of the home and she does not).
Mom is responsible for keeping the refrigerator in as good working order as she can and it and the pantry full of good, nutritious food. She is also responsible for cooking a main meal most days. She is not responsible to cook or prepare every morsel you eat, nor is she responsible to clean up all of your dishes and clean up after you every time you eat.
Mon is responsible to keep plenty of cleaning supplies around, and for keeping her own bathroom and half of the bedroom neat and tidy. She is not responsible for cleaning everything, including your bathrooms and bedrooms, or all of the common rooms. Everyone is responsible to pick up their own things in the common areas and should take turns with cleaning those areas.
Mom is responsible for keeping garbage cans and bags plentiful in the place, but is not responsible for emptying all of them all of the time.
Mom is responsible for keeping cat food and litter and other cat supplies in the house, and taking them to the vet. She is not responsible for all of their care, and their feeding, watering, and litter cleaning should be shared on a rotation by everyone who likes and pets the cats (and don't think i didn't see you snuggling with Link or sneaking Little Girlie into your bedroom last night!).
Of course, everyone could write up their own, and this list is only partial, but now that i have written some of it out, i may finish it off and post it in the house!
Sorry for hijacking the thread, but it felt good to get that down.

messymimi messymimi, I simply love your list. And I also love your signature, what is written on a mug. I sometimes think I could have the mug done... if only I have not had so many mugs already.
