"You've got to say, I think that if I keep working at this and want it badly enough I can have it. It's called perseverance." ~ Lee Iacocca
"You're not obligated to win. You're obligated to keep trying to do the best you can every day." ~ Marian Wright Edelman
"When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hang on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn." ~ Harriet Beecher Stowe
"When things go wrong as they sometimes will; When the road you're trudging seems all uphill; When the funds are low, and the debts are high And you want to smile, but have to sigh; When care is pressing you down a bit- Rest if you must, but do not quit. Success is failure turned inside out; The silver tint of the clouds of doubt; And you can never tell how close you are It may be near when it seems so far; So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit- It's when things go wrong that you must not quit." ~ Unknown
Dragon, i hope you are getting better.

I'm reading the original "Living in third degree squalor" post, and this poem was posted by Overwhelmed towards the bottom of page 9:
How To Do Something
A poem from the Zine "Oop" (Joey Harrison, Editor, JoeyHarrison@usa.net) to subscribe).
HOW TO DO SOMETHING
First, begin. That's the first thing. You begin and then you proceed. Proceed is next. Proceed for quite a while. This is the main part: The proceeding. The proceeding is actually the meat of doing something. If something gets done, Credit the proceeding. After awhile the proceeding gives way to the wind-up -- The finishing. This transition is delicate. Too soon is bad, Too late expends needless energy. At the very instant something is at last done, Fade the proceeding and move directly to finishing. Finish instantly.

Over two years ago, I started this thread because I loved quotes. I often find inspiration in other people's words, so like a true hoarder, I began collecting quotes. (At least they don't take up as much room as some of the other things I collect. ) I kept the thread going for several months, posting a new quote every day--and then disaster struck. So I and my quotes have been gone for a while, but now we are back and so is this thread. For the remainder of the month, I'm going to be posting quotes that helped and inspired me as I recovered. But I want to hear from you, too. Are there quotes, sayings, t-shirt slogans, whatever, that have inspired you to keep going when you wanted to quit? Please feel free to share them here. At the beginning of September, I'll go back to my regular format of choosing a "quote topic" for the month. What will it be? Well, I don't know--cleaning? Kittens? Underwater basketweaving? (Okay, probably not that last one, but with me you never know. Hope you check back in come September to find out. Let the quoting begin... “If you're reading this... Congratulations, you're alive. If that's not something to smile about, Then I don't know what is.” --Chad Sugg, Monsters Under Your Head“Through humor, you can soften some of the worst blows that life delivers. And once you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be, you can survive it.”--Bill Cosby "If you're going through hell, keep going."--Winston Churchill "When life gives you lemons, please, just don't squirt them in other people's eyes."--J. Andrew Helt

“At what point do you give up--decide enough is enough? There is only one answer really. Never.”--Tabitha Suzuma, Forbidden
“There is a saying in Tibetan, 'Tragedy should be utilized as a source of strength.' No matter what sort of difficulties, how painful experience is, if we lose our hope, that's our real disaster.”--Dalai Lama XIV
“It's the possibility that keeps me going, not the guarantee.”--Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook
“Part of the problem with the word 'disabilities' is that it immediately suggests an inability to see or hear or walk or do other things that many of us take for granted. But what of people who can't feel? Or talk about their feelings? Or manage their feelings in constructive ways? What of people who aren't able to form close and strong relationships? And people who cannot find fulfillment in their lives, or those who have lost hope, who live in disappointment and bitterness and find in life no joy, no love? These, it seems to me, are the real disabilities.” --Fred Rogers, The World According to Mister Rogers: Important Things to Remember

Great thread. Spent the last two hours reading through it... I once read this in a magazine and have used the translated version of it when moderating a SHG (self-help-group): "The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain."-Dolly Parton "If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome."- Anne Bradstreet
"Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today."- Thich Nhat Hanh
"The greatest masterpieces were once only pigments on a palette."-Henry Hoskins
"You wouldn't worry so much about what people really thought of you if you knew just how seldom they do. "- Unknown

Hey ramatama! So glad you enjoyed the thread and I'm so happy you decided to contribute! All of those are great quotes, but I must admit I'm especially partial to the one by Dolly. No one can cut to the chase like a girl (or guy) with country roots. Hi ellie! Great t-shirt slogans are classics that always make you smile--who cares if it's on topic? Thank you for sharing your favorite with us.

while looking up quotes in my files, I found a little poem that I had saved to contribute previously, but then never found in time. (Not sure what thread it really belongs to.) Living Rooms
by Nova Trimble Ashley
Some rooms are done in Danish mode, Contemporary, French abode, Colonial, or border On modern Japanese decor; But mine is none of these--it's more Like Permanent Disorder!
