Ok, so here it goes.
I don't like going to the dumpster. I never have. Its inconvenient, across the parking lot, and always smells bad. Often there's trash strewn around on the ground and often half or completely full. Its full because its in an unlocked location and just about anyone can dump in our dumpster, as well as dig through our dumpster. I pay the city 8 dollars a month for garbage service and a dumpster that is often neglected to the point I have to ask my landlords to call the city to have it emptied. I've often wished I could rent my own, place it in a more convenient place, and be responsible for taking my own trash to the curb on trash day.
So a thought occurred to me, why should I be limited to the dumpster? Why can't I rent one of those green/black/whatevercolor cans from the city, keep it in the downstairs hallway, and haul my own trash out the front door to the curb (far closer than the actual dumpster)?
So I called the city. It will cost me 8 dollars a month to rent a can (when they have one available - there's a bit of a can shortage) and it will be on top of the 8 dollars I pay for the dumpster. Honestly, for me, this seems like a good solution. I'm hoping to get a can soon, that way I can be responsible for my own garbage, and not have to deal with the dumpster nastyness. So what if i pay 12 bucks a month for garbage - to me, thats a small price to pay.
I've estimated it will take about a month for me to get rid of everything if i just use the can and take the larger (less heavy/bulky) stuff to the dumpster. Then I won't run the risk of people going through my garbage. (a fear of mine)

$16 a month. Worth it if you just have to do it for a couple of months.

Followed up today and called the city again. I had to remind the lady what I wanted and she said she would call me back tomorrow. I will try to call her tomorrow before 5 pm est to followup.
Fingers crossed they allow me to have a personal trash can. (Chances are good they will since I'll be paying extra for it.)

UPDATE!!!!
Called the city today(Friday 5/14), they called me back. Apparently they had to ask whoever the city garbage manager is about me getting a can and being in an apartment complex (seeing as I have a dumpster already at my disposal.) The lady who called me back said that it should not be a problem for me to get a can and that she would put me on the waiting list for a can.
I inquired as to how long the waiting list is, and she apologized and said it was pretty long, but that I should have a can in a month (probably a little longer). I'm betting they compile a list of folks who want cans, then order (probably once a month) when the list is sufficiently long enough.
The good news is, I will get my can.. eventually!

When your can arrives, check to see whether it might have a liner with a false bottom. If so, remove the liner, and you'll be able to cram more trash in it.
I'm so grateful to my neighbor for showing me this trick.

Those giant trashcans are great. They have wheels and lids, and you can cram about 7 big bags of trash into them. A bag a day! Easy to move if you pull it behind you like a child's wagon, rather than trying to push it in front of you.

Hi Phoebe,
Just something to keep in mind... Think about somehow marking your bin so that someone else doesn't try to take it after the garbage truck comes each week.
(I tend to be rather on the cynical/non-trusting side and don't trust that others in your apartment complex won't try to 'steal' your garbage can.)

oh i shall be marking it for sure. i've seen numbers on the cans so i wonder if a can is assigned to a person and if its stolen yeah... see, noone uses the front entrance/streetside, so i should be pretty safe... anyhow..

So i called the city early this week, they said they had to order cans and they would be here by friday (they hoped).. so i called again today (friday) they said that the cans had definitely been ordered, but had not come in yet and to check in again on monday. With any luck sometime next week, hopefully before wed/thurs trash day, i can get a can, fill it and have it emptied and ready for the next weeks trash. I'm finally getting a trash can!
