The clumping litter is the best; I use the store-brand and it works really well. It costs less than the other brands too! I don't use plastic bags or any liners; just the plastic box (which has a cover to walk in). I scoop it out a lot!! That is the secret of cleaning! It's in the bathroom. Each time I go in there I check it. And always put a little more litter in it after cleaning. Each time Mesquite uses the box, he jumps out of it and runs down the hall when finished. Ha. Like he's thinking, "hey, that wasn't me who made that mess!". So each time I hear him run down the hall, I go and clean the box. So, it's a nice clean box for him all the time. Well, he's got his maid trained.

If you have a yard or live somewhere fairly rural, you can also start with two litter boxes. Use one indoors and scoop it regularly (once or twice a day). When it gets dirty, dump out the litter (In your regular trash, never ever in a toilet), take it outside and give a good hose-down. You may even want to use a toilet brush to give it a good scrubbing. If using the same brush for humans and animals grosses you out, get a second brush. Then leave the box outside in the sun, rain, etc to really let Mother Nature go to work. Then set up the second box indoors. When it gets dirty, rotate. Etc. The only thing to watch out for-don't let the box that's outside get full of water. That breeds mosquitoes, illness, etc.

I always think, for her, she just took a huge dump and is so relieved, she is thinking while running across the room, "I'm FREE!!!!"

I *just* put this in another thread and then saw this one.
I got a plastic jar that is about a foot tall and about as big around as a coffee can. It has a screw on lid (came from the dollar store). I keep it next to the litter box, and every time I use the bathroom, I scoop the litter box into the jar. When the jar is full, I dump the whole thing into the litter box, and take the litter out.
Taking the litter out is made much simpler by using cat pan liners with drawstrings. I grab the strings, pull tight, and I have a nice tidy bag to take out to the garbage. Then just pop in a new liner, pour in the litter, and start the process over.
