I was on Oprah.com and saw this, and thought I would post it because it might be of interest. It is a quiz about whether or not you or a family member have compulsive hoarding behaviors. www.oprah.com/home/Hoarding-Severity-Scale

I would have a hard time with this today as I am still unpacking (sort of anyway) I have yet to get to it now for couple days...resting my back....but I looked and the first question stopped me in my tracks because I know I am no where near being able to take a test like this now....

I took the quiz based on "now" since I finished my home 8 months ago.
Clutter score: 0
Difficulty Discarding score: 1
Acquiring score: 0
Each of these scores can be interpreted as:
0–2: Minimal This is probably not something you need to worry about.
3–7: Mild Although you may have a bit of clutter, difficulty discarding or acquiring, it is unlikely to be a significant problem for you. You might want to consider working on these issues, perhaps using a self-directed manual such as Buried in Treasures.
8–12: Moderate In all likelihood, you have a significant hoarding-related problem. People who score in this range typically find their lives to be impacted by clutter, difficulty discarding or acquiring. You might benefit from working on the problem on your own with a manual such as Buried in Treasures. However, you could also consider working with a mental health professional who knows about the treatment of hoarding.
13–17: Severe People who score in this range usually find that their quality of life is suffering quite a bit due to hoarding-related concerns. A self-directed manual such as Buried in Treasures might be a good start, but if you score in this range, you will probably find that you need the help of a professional to beat the problem.
18–20: Very Severe If you scored in this range on any of the clutter, difficulty discarding or acquiring scales, it's time to get professional help. People who score in this range are probably going to have a very hard time tackling this problem on their own. Contact a mental health professional who knows about the treatment of hoarding.

Clutter score: 5 Difficulty Discarding score: 3 Acquiring score: 7 All this does is confirm what I already know - I'm "just" messy and procrastinate-y (I'll go with that instead of the "L" word. )

Well, i took my own quiz. I was very surprised by the results! I did not think I would have ANY issue with hoarding, cause I'm all squalor all the time. But look! Clutter score: 1 Difficulty Discarding score: 6 Acquiring score: 6 Each of these scores can be interpreted as: 0–2: Minimal This is probably not something you need to worry about. Come to think of it, some of it does make sense. I do have a lot of stuff in my trunk that never gets used, or does not belong to me that I should totally have tossed already, but I never "get around to it". Maybe my procrastinating is masking some of my difficulty with letting things go? Clutter score is so low because I threw away nearly everything I owned last time I moved. I was sick of having STUFF and wanted a minimalist existence. Its working out very, very nicely, by the way! I don't think it is necessarily that I am holding onto things because I am attached to the things. It is more like I don't want to bother with throwing them away, that part is too much effort, and sometimes I don't know HOW to throw certain things away, because they are too big or not acceptable to trash bins or something like that. And I usually feel guilty about throwing other people's things away, even if they should have gotten it long ago. So that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Interesting! I'm a 7-7-3 at the moment. 7 is awfully close to 8, and without the Chat Challenge train I would have scored higher!

that seemed like fun.. until I read the results Clutter score: 15 Difficulty d. : 13 Adquiring score: 17 I don't consider myself a hoarder though, my reasoning has always been that we live in a very small house.

clutter 8 discarding 11 aquiring 7
this makes sense to me. I've never had tons of money, and I've worked hard to reduce my need to aquire stuff. i still want things intensely, but can be logical about what I can afford and what might actually get used.
a lot of my clutter is still stuff I've had for over 10 or more years. the stuff i still have from when I probably would have scored a lot higher in all areas of the quiz are still the hardest to part with. new stuff is easier, except magazines.
I think the numbers match up with my extremely slow but steady (if you include 3 steps forward, 2 back style.) progess. actually i think maybe I've nowadvanced to 3 steps forward 1 step back.

0, 5, 2
That's NOW though. If I'd answered a few years back, the clutter score at least would've been off the charts.
