This weekend is a holiday in the US but I thought we could celebrate our new forum by doing a special holiday challenge! Everyone is invited to join in! In honor of someone you love who has passed on, do three things for your home. It can be as simple as washing dishes or go for the gold by cleaning out the closet in the spare room! Then if you can and are able, buy some flowers and light a candle in remembrance of your loved one. If you want, post here and share what you did and who you honored. I'm doing my challenge in honor of my mother, who went to be with the Lord on May 27, 1994. My first part of the challenge is to declutter my car (again! ). I have some bags of items to donate to the charity thrift shop and I need to drive over there tomorrow! Happy challenging!!!!!!

Hi Rennie Ellen,
This is coming at an opportune time for me... we're heading to Florida to clear out my Mother-in-Law's house. She passed away from Cancer in March. There's lots to be done, but we'll remember to take the time to honor her, too. We did some of this in March, when she passed, so I'm hoping we can keep our emotions under check.
I'm babbling!! Thanks again!

Hi everybody, I decided to come over from SS finally. My Memorial Day Challenge is in memory of Daddy who went to be with Jesus in 1997. I will do three challenges. Challenge One: Completely clean the hallway--walls, light switch, floors, walls--everything. Challenge Two: Completely clean the bathroom, walls, floors, mirror, organize and clean cabinets, wipe off walls, sweep and vacuum floors, wipe out shower, clean toilet--everything. Challenge Three: Clean the office--get old computer boxes out, get rid of trash, place bookcase where it should be, place computer desk in correct position, clean off computer desk, wash window, clean mini blinds, organize CDs and put them somewhere where they won't be lost--clean and organize everything. (used to be Jeannie at SS. Have new user name now.)

Hi Needtodeclutter aka Jeanie - great to see you, love the new name
Rennie Ellen - what a great challenge! I will be doing my challenge in honor of my grandparents. We have plans Saturday and Sunday, but I will work on this challenge tonight and Monday.
My goals: - Get kitchen to Level 0 - which means sweeping and mopping floor! - Get Living Room back to Level 0 (luckily this means only containing DDs "project" and then dusting vacuuming) - De-clutter/clean Dining Room (so we can use whole Dining room table) - Declutter/clean breakfast nook/office so we can use it again - Help DD clean her playroom - Finish cleaning bedroom - Clean bathrooms including yucky shower
This is a big list, but things will be so improved if I can even knock off half!
Thanks for the challenge,
notc

In honor of someone you love who has passed on, do three things for your home. This weekend is the fundraising tea for the music collective with which I play. We organize monthly PROFESSIONALLY COACHED workshops; we are in our 25th year. Hurrah! For the last 22 years, this fundraising tea was held in MY HOME. This often involved huge amounts of crisis cleaning, stash-and-dash, hiring outside help, and general screaming banshee madwoman marathons of doom. With SS's help, I eventually got to the point where I enjoyed more MAINTENANCE and fewer last-minute panic cleanings. This year, the Tea will be held in a public place: a not-very-nice room in a huge library in an area of the city without much parking . We have had a lot of problems with the organization of this event. I am personally VERY DEPRESSED about the way things are working out (or not working out). PLUS: I get really really tired from this kind of event. I am playing in one group (6 people) and our last rehearsals did NOT go well..... All my work AT HOME this weekened will be in honour of my music friends who have passed away (Lois, Heide, Isabelle, Joyce, George, Beth and others). I do NOT want to neglect my home, just because I will be doing some fundraising and music-making work at this Tea. Things I want to do: *dishes daily *unload dishwasher daily *make bed daily *swish & swipe daily *tiny tidy daily Thanks to all for the inspirations. Luv from Script

Thanks for the challenge, Rennie Ellen!
I have backslid in doing anything for my home, other than take care of the lawn work. This weekend I hope to dabble in each of my 17 areas of squalor. I haven't vacuumed in over a month. Everything needs dusting.
(Crossed-out items are DONE!)
Goals: 1) I'd like to get my small bathroom down to 0 degrees. 2) Wash all dishes; unload dishwasher; scrub counter-tops; vacuum floor; scrub floor with cleanser & mop; wipe down all doors 3) Clear out master bathroom closet and sort through clothes; create big give-away pile 4) dust and vacuum small hallway 5) get all laundry done (work clothes & towels); fold & put everything away; vacuum laundry room floor 6) vacuum/mop atrium, water all house plants 7) dust & vacuum master bedroom; wash sheets & bedspread 8) vacuum & dust living room 9) vacuum & dust dining room 10) clear out foyer; put items away; vacuum & mop floor; dust table; vacuum cobwebs 11) vacuum & dust computer room; gather up books from bookcases that I want to throw out or give away; shred papers 12) clean out car; vacuum; wipe interior & exterior windows; re-install clean floor mats; wipe dashboard & steering wheel of dust 13) edge around front lawn landscaping; pull weeds in backyard 14) put stuff away in garage 15) organize linen closet; put shop & drop items away 16) replace all burned out lightbulbs around home 17) mystery task - perhaps see a movie?
We'll see how much I can accomplish this weekend . . .

I think the challenge is a great idea and for me it will be in memory of my sister who passed away two months ago. She was a military veteran (20 years active duty) so I'll be getting the flags out and put up in front of my place to include the new flags I just bought. (The Army and the Air Force are well represented in my family and there were several vets including myself). I will weed whack where needed since we have had plenty of rain and then some the past several weeks to make the place look nicer for Memorial Day. I need to work on my garden and since my sister was a master gardener this garden also is in memory of her so some red flowers (geraniums especially) are definitely in order! (I have a feeling I will be feeling the effects of all the work all next week but the weather is supposed to be warm and sunny for a change). Be Blessed and have a safe enjoyable and productive weekend!

What a great idea! For me, it will be in memory of my grandfather who passed on in spring of 1998, and also to honor my husband, who deserves a cleaner house when he gets back from deployment!
This isn't a "to do" list for me to check off, but more of a wish list of things that I would like to get done at some point. If for some reason I got all of them done, then I would (first faint in shock!) and then go treat myself and the kids to some ice cream. If I only get 2-3 of them done, then that would still be an improvement over how the house is now.
- get tomatoes planted - get herb box planted - mow front yard - edge front yard (these 4 depend on the whims of WA weather) - buy new covers for patio furniture before it gets ruined - look for a new pressure washer - pick up toys scattered in the family room (a.k.a., BoD - Basement of Doom) - gather up random dishes hiding in BoD - declutter my car again - vacuum BoD - 6 loads of laundry - mop (OK, Scooba) dining room, kitchen and foyer - change sheets on my bed, DS' bed, DD's bed - hang/put away 5 pictures from behind the couch - wash laundry room rugs - 15 minutes cleaning laundry room - clean downstairs hallway (throw away junk, sweep/wash floor) - clear off & wipe down bathroom counter in master bath - clear off & wipe down bathroom counter in kids' bath - 15 minutes desqualoring in bedroom - clear out upstairs hallway - vacuum upstairs hallway - clean icky spots in upstairs hallway - vacuum kids' rooms

Today I got the bags of stuff to the charity thrift store (Disabled Vets). First challenge done! I'm having a not-so-good day today. The colitis is flaring up. But I did my second challenge -- throwing out the dirty cat litter, cleaning the litterbox and filling it with clean litter. Angel, I think, knows I'm doing something for HER....she just sits so straight and still and watches me intently with her big green eyes. When I'm finished, I tell her it's ready and she goes inside (it's one of those covered litterboxes with a flap door) and does her thing, then comes out and gives a "Meow" of thanks. Second challenge done! Tomorrow....I don't want to wimp out on my own challenge, but I'm running a low grade temp. This usually happens when I have a colitis flareup. Then I have to rest and take it easy so I don't end up in the hospital. But the laundry does need to be folded so I can do that for my third challenge. HAPPY CHALLENGING!!!

What a nice idea! I will do 3 things in memory of my Mom who passed away in 2004. I have already done 2 things today: took 3 boxes of books that I haven't even looked at in 5 years over to a co-workers house, and I cleaned out my underwear drawer of all the "too old and tattered to wear" underwear to make room for some new ones! Tomorrow I will remove the junk that is stashed behind the closet door in the bedroom. If I can bear to part with anything there I will, the rest will go to the shed in the backyard.

Three things - in memory of my father who served in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in WW2 and who died peacefully some fourteen years ago.
1. Clean the kitchen floor and do it well - after my Mum was ill with cancer this job became Dad's and I remember him doing it and to Mum's standard.
2. File away the papers on my table. Dad was always very well organised and sturctured in his work. He reminded me that on a ship there was a place for everything and everything was in its place.
3. Go out today to the local Mosque to meet people and try to achieve communication and understanding. Dad always appreciated different people and cultures and hated war. He fought to preserve a freedom and way of life which he valued.
On Monday I am meeting a friend to help her with her paper record problems. When I get back I shall post again on this thread. I have some challenging and difficult things to do next week and I shall remember the courage of those who have faced much greater challenges.
Regards Rexroth

Okay, Rennie. Now I have even more reasons to get moving today. Thank you. I hope you are over this bout really soon. My Father-n-law is in the hospital ...rushed by ambulance earlier in the week & has been diagnosed with Colitis. You may remember one of my brother's got this a few years ago & has been dealing on & off with flare ups, too. Please take care of you & don't worry about this challenge. You have already done alot!!! I will be thinking of my Grandma & Meme as I challenge. Grandma was probably one of the sweetest people i've ever met. Meme was a feisty woman & I remember her dusting her apartment...she was The Bingo Queen. My main 3 from my list in listzilla are: 1)clean out cabinet in kitchen under sink (well, need to remove shelf paper & put new in & wipe off items & put in...have already removed them & keepers have been sitting in 2 boxes on my kitchen floor for over a week since plumbers came out to fix leak. Also, already got rid of poison type chemicals thru city's chemical pickup & already tossed a bunch). Done. Looks great! 2)remove linens on my bed & put new comforter & new sheets on. Also, change mattress pad. (New comforter & sheets have been sitting in package in my room on top of boxes--Mt. Vesuvius method here-- where it has continually fallen & been put back up there for a couple months now!!!) -- Done Well, I'll have to wait on the new sheets as it turns out I need to wash them first. I did put clean linens on and mattress pad. New comforter on it & it looks beautiful!!!3)either declutter orange chair in den or area between side of my bed & dresser---totally cluttered, have been really stretching to reach alarmclock & tiny, tiny path down some of that area...the rest can't see the floor much less walk there. Will check back later. Best wishes to everyone! CD

Well, I got sidelined today because of my colitis. The low grade temp is gone and I can eat yogurt, applesauce, soup and popsicles without it triggering those cramps and mad dashes to the bathroom. And I made some caffeine free blueberry iced herb tea this morning. (With a little sugar, it's yummy! ) But I pretty much spent today sleeping, watching TV, and puttering around on the computer. My bathroom, of course, is a total mess from the past week's mad dashes. My booster seat for the commode is all yucky and I wipe up the floor (and do laundry ) when needed. When I'm feeling better, I plan to give the bathroom a good clean. I just can't right now though, and it bothers me that I can't. I HATE this disease with a passion. It makes me a prisoner in my own home for obvious reasons. I've had it for 30 years and I should be used to it by now, but every time I have an "accident", I still cry my eyes out. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day. Depending on how I'm feeling, I'll fold laundry for my third challenge. Hope everyone else is doing well on their challenges!

I am late getting started on the Memorial Day Weekend Challenge, but better late than never!
My cleaning this weekend is in honor of my grandparents, who were good housekeepers, even in their eighties when they were getting feeble.
1. Gather trash in living room and get it to the dumpster. 2. Wash 4 loads of clothes (about half of what is dirty) 3. Go through boxes of stuff in living room from my old job/office. Throw away most of it and only save really important things. 4. Kitchen- clean dishes (3 dishwasher loads or so) 5. Kitchen - clean counters and stove. 6. Clean old food from fridge. 7. Bedroom - gather trash and clothes from floor. 8. Bedroom - clean off the top of the dresser and night stands. 9. Master bathroom - clean! 10. Vacuum floors as they are cleared. 11. Clean out hope chest. 12. Clean out at least one of the storage boxes in the closet of doom.
I will be in chat tomorrow and hopefully some of you will join me!
Onward Annie
