In general, if I do serious work, it doesnt matter how I work, I make headway. But I think I'm going to try staying in one room to completion just to see if it makes a difference. Nothing to lose by trying. It's going to be the dining room. I did some very good work in there last winter, so I'm not starting from scratch.
My kitchen is essentially done (except for inside the drawers), and I really like how it looks and how much more functional it is.

i jump around like a maniac. when i am in a super cleaning mode, i find myself cleaning one area of one room, and then getting distracted by another area of another room. i call it my "reverse dominos mentality". in my head, one thing can't be cleaned until the thing before it is cleaned.
i make a strong effort to stay in one area and finish it, otherwise i can work for hours and nothing looks any different. i am most successful with this when i make lists of what needs to be done in each room and check it off as i go.

I do tasks, like fluffernut. It seems more manageable to me (even when my house is fairly orderly) to pick up floor stuff, then dishes, then tabletop/surface trash, then mail and so forth.

The way that works best for me is staying with a project and if it gets too difficult I just clean something else . I try not to have an attitude of all or nothing. In the past that has made me freeze up and do nothing. No matter what I'm gonna keep going.

I said: Follow up: It's been a few days and I've done lots of good decluttering in there, but am finding it's going to be impossible to just complete the dining room before doing significant work in another area first. The dining room (we eat in a more pleasant, less formal area of the house) has been used to store things mostly, and the table was the default 'open' surface for craft projects so there is/was too much stuff in there - lots of which I am not ready to either sort yet, or get rid of. So..... Before I can do more in there, I need to clear space in the garage so I can move some of that stuff (that will need to be sorted eventually) elsewhere. There is one hobby (in many boxes) in particular that I will keep - but not in that room. I do have an ineffective tendency to just move things from one room to another, but in this case it's the right thing to do in order to keep my eye on the main goal - making the 'public rooms' presentable. So....Instead of being able to do the dining room completely before moving on, I need to do some garage work first. (There should be some low-hanging fruit in there.) It seems jumping around for me is not only my cleaning style, it's a necessity. Glad I tried it and learned something.

Betsymarie---That is interesting to hear. We definitely find our own way, don't we ? And we are different in our approaches because WE are different. Whatever works, I say. In the end, it will get done, whatever way works for us. catcat
