We have trash pickup once a week on Thursdays, and that is provided for in our winter taxes through the township. there is a limit of 30 bags! (I never used the limit, but my best friend had over 30, and they still took all of it)!!

i live mid-town, large city. as i live in a home [not apartment] i have service weekly, but it is on a rotation:
*green bin = food compost: picked up weekly *blue bin = recycling: picked up biweekly, alternating with *black bin = true trash: picked up biweekly
*yard garbage: must be in specific bags: picked up on schedule -sometimes weekly, sometimes bi-weekly: not in winter
*we have a complex info calendar from the city: showing what to be picked up when. every district is on a different timetable. we are THURSDAYS, usually very early morning
*there are also limits: extra recycling can be put out in clear bags. NO EXTRA TRASH except with city-provided non-transferrable tags. If you need more tags, you have to BUY THEM. very expensive.
*true garbage MUST fit in the provided bin. overflows not accepted. Bin must be properly closed. Must use city-provided bin. NO OTHERS ACCEPTED. Billed as part of water-sewage tax.
*we cannot put wine-beer-liquor recylables in the bins. they go back to a specific store for $$$. It is illegal for poor people to dumpster dive for these.
*i also voluntarily do other recycling for EnviroDay drop-offs.
I voted 'weekly'. I noted how incredibly EASY it is to handle trash-recycling in my mom's apartment: just walk down hall, dispose. no storage issues.
Places like Ikea, Home Depot etc have big sections in the stores/catalogues for home reycling stations. Most people have recycle and other bins in multiple areas of their homes [eg: I have recycle mini-bins on all three floors, plus trash on every floor. I have one only compost bin: in kitchen]
Further complication: we have huge animal issues in our area, primarily racoons, so no food garbage can be stored outside without protection. Many people use bungy-cord arrangements, or build mini-storage sheds or hang their bins high off the ground.
if we 'miss' a day, it is very annoying, as the garbage-recycling just piles up. residents are encouraged to get together with neighbours to handle overflows. i frequently find other people's stuff [trash, recycling, composting] in our bins. we are lucky: we get together with other neighbours to handle our collective garbage stuff, but we usually ASK each other first.
we also have sidewalks on our street, so our bins can sit there. in other areas without sidewalks the bins HAVE to sit on the street: really tricky for parking/driving. DON'T ASK what goes on here in the winter, especially in heavy snowfalls........

wow. that sucks people can't dumpster dive for cans, etc. but i guess maybe better for the homeowners. years ago, i would just seperate our cans and hang them from the mail box so the dude didn't have to go through the trash and it made everybody happy. your system sounds really complicated. do you need an entire appointment book just for trash?

We have city pick-up twice a week. Our trash must be in sealed trash bags placed in the large wheeled bin provided by the city. We requested a 2nd bin and I think we paid for it one time rather than monthly. We use 3 smaller bins for recycling which is picked up every two weeks. We can't recycle glass here; I'm sure that could be dangerous for the workers. Since we fill up our recycle bins we seldom use our 2nd trash bin. I don't like it they we have to put animal leavings into sealed plastic bags - from picking up the back yard, and also from the litter boxes (we use pine litter). It's just so wrong. We cheat when it comes to trimming the bougainvilleas; we cut the branches small and stuff them in the can - no bag. Our trash bins are picked up automatically by the truck so I doubt that anyone notices. This also means the bins have to be placed just so, backed up straight against the curb with the top hinge toward the house. (They are also returned to that exact position which is kind of nice.) There cannot be anything beside or on top of the bin and the lid must close all the way. If you have more trash than the bin can handle you're on your own. No one has ever asked to borrow our extra bin. We are facing a rate increase soon. Also the city is considering switching to weekly pickup which we could now handle.

My brother bags up empty redeemable (for money) recyclables & gives them to whatever homeless person he sees when he takes his daily walk. Sometimes he includes a sandwich or fruit. (In a separate bag.)

I have ZERO trash service!! I have to haul my own trash to the dump/transfer station, which is a royal pain in the a*s!! It makes it much harder to get rid of stuff than if I just had to bring it out to the curb or a dumpster. Instead I have to 1) load it into my car 2) drive to the dump 3) get out of the car at recycling area 4) walk up and down the recycling bins, dropping stuff in each individual dumpster that holds whatever I'm recycling 5) get back in the car 6) drive over to trash dumpsters 7) get out of the car again 8) throw trash bags into dumpsters 9) get back in car 10) drive home again. No wonder it is a stumbling block to get rid of stuff!! I envy all those who have some wonderful people drive to their house to take away their stuff. What a luxury!! I know, I'm whining, but let me whine on this one, will ya???

Pickup at the house for regular garbage twice a week. Pickup for recycling once a week. Pickup for yard waste once a week. Oops! Our trash pickup is once a week, not two. Friday mornings. We have a lot of things billed on one piece of paper, known simply as the utility bill: electricity gas water trash pickup recyclables pick up yard waste pick up You have to call for this one. They usually pick it up the next day, after you call."solid waste" (like furniture) You have to call for this one too.mosquito control (They come along at night and have a big truck spray mosquito spray in the area. They don't do this nearly enough, and we pay for it. I think twice this summer.)

carrie on that is exactly why i started this thread. so that we would all realize the different problems we face trying to get out of this situation.
it was worth it to me to go in with several neighbors to get a small dumpster that is picked up weekly. split three ways, thats 25/month. this way, i can dispose of my trash each day. that might not be the way you want to go, but just throwing an idea out there.
angelpuss, i am similar to you re living situation and leftover stuff on property from a few previous owners. the price was amazing, so i wasn't going to blow the deal by busting their chops over stuff.
re the metal. it had not occured to me that i could call a guy to come and get the metal for cash!!!!!! there is so much old stuff on this property .i've hauled away lots of it, but geez. i dno't think i will get it all done by winter which had been my goal. but your're right since much of it IS METAL, MAYBE someone would jsut come get it and it wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg.

Ours is contracted out by county to private folks who pick up, pd. for by taxes, & we have trash pickup on Thurs. & recycle, single stream[all together] on Mon. Yard waste on Mon. too, but not in Winter. That goes into bags, NO BAGS IN RECYCLE BIN or they come with cloaks & daggers & get you at night---welll---

that is exactly why i started this thread. so that we would all realize the different problems we face trying to get out of this situation. When I was posting, I was thinking how easy it is for us to unload trash & garbage and consumables that can be recycled. 'Very little effort involved. It is a part of our maintenance that always gets done so there's never a backlog. I'm thankful that I don't have to use energy and effort to "figure out" trash removal. to those who do.
