The boxsprings is in really bad shape. The mice made it a home. The garbage place said that they'd take the mattress, but not the boxsprings.

I have no answer for you, but since your garbage service won't take them, maybe you could call them and ask where you can get rid of it. There must be someplace or people would be tossing them along roadsides (not a good thing).

Can you take it apart and bag up the parts? I know some of the frame boards are a bit long for garbage bagging but if you have a hammer or crowbar and a small saw -- it might be possible to get it into a couple of strong yard bags? Seems like I remember doing this once years ago.

I dont know if you rent or own? I rent and when I threw the matress and boxspring out, I called the landlord and asked him if he could add whatever it cost for the trash company to haul it off to my rent. He said "Dont worry about it hun, I will pick it up myself with the truck and get rid of it." Where he took it? I have no idea. But If you have a landlord, you may want to ask them.

Our garbage company picks up large stuff like that once a year. A couple of years ago, we put out box springs and it was actually fun to watch the truck 'eat' it.
Do you have garbage pick up? You could call and ask how much it would cost to pick up a large item such as box springs.
I was assuming by garbage place, you meant the dump. But I could be wrong.
If you meant the garbage pick-up folks, then I'd find out if there is a dump you can take it to, as I have seen many box springs in dumps.
If neither of those work, you can dismantle it outdoors and put the pieces into your trash a little per week. The springs themselves are recyclable, too. The long boards can be used for wood, if you are so inclined, or you can put them on the curb and maybe someone will want the wood. If it doesn't get picked up after a few days, then try and break the wood into shorter lengths to fit into the garbage can.

Our community has a well-developed recycling program, and even they don't take mattresses or box springs.
If your're willing to take it apart, my best suggestion would be to call your trash hauler or a metal scrapper and find out if you could recycle the metal portion. If so, take it apart.
Do you have a neighbor who could haul it to the dump, in exchange for a batch of cookies or a casserole?
I don't have a vehicle that can haul large items, so recently I rented a pickup truck for a couple of hours, and did a whole bunch of hauling at one time.

Wow, very suprised the dump wont' take box springs, wonder why?
If you can get a hammer and crowbar--take it apart. Burn the wood. Put the fiber/cloth in your trash. Take the metal springs to the scrappy and get a little cash back for it.
Alternately--look on Craig's List for folks who do foreclosure cleanup. Set up an appointment with them, have them haul off that boxspring and anything else you can fit in their truck/trailer.

When I had the dumpster last month we broke the boxspring into smaller pieces and put it in the dumpster. I have another one and now I am worried that I may not be able to take it to the dump. I will have to check on that.

Can you burn it? Sounds bad, but it is mostly wood and cloth. And then artists and metal sculptors love the squiggly metal parts inside. Some clever gardeners use the metal springs linked together to make interesting vine creepers, or gazebos. The possibilities are endless! Of course - - that is how I got myself into my own mess in the first place.

Do what everyone else does and put them out by the street to be picked up.
