Meta,
You are right, and I don't want to be harassed, just encouraged and supported.

Also, I could volunteer to help with the copy and pasting from the old site. Although I probably won't be able to do anything until the weekend. And if it entails anything more than just cutting or pasting I'll need some hand-holding. I'm assuming you are referring to all of the stuff on the main board and all of the information around things like "demand-resistance" etc.? Just take the time to manually go through and copy things and paste them on a portion of this board? (If I've totally missed the boat on what this entails, let me know. I have no ego when it comes to computer stuff!) notc notc, that sounds perfect. i will add another section and title it archive, or if you guys have a better name, let me know i can change it, and then whenever you, or anyone else that wishes to, gets time you can copy/paste or link to that section. thanks for volunteering!!

I do like the idea of having a section for articles/stories that may be accompanied by pictures that is open to public viewing. I also think we should permit non-members to read widely, but not to post.

How about just another board that is title "Stories / Pictures" with a reminder there that they WILL be accessible to the public? Or, and I have no idea if this is hard or not, but maybe a warning window that would pop up when someone posted there, where they'd click "ok" to acknowledge that they understand that the posts/pics on that board will be publically available? just thoughts.

I would like the general messages, at least, to be open to non-members, since so many seem to have found their help by reading & discovering that they were similar to us. I do think that only members should be allowed to post, though. That is the way most boards seem to be run & as someone above mentioned, it would keep nasty comments from spoiling the board. Blessings, catcat

I definitely like the idea of Read Only being public. I read for a very long time before I had the courage to post. If y'all are familiar with the 5 Stages of Change thenf people come through a Contemplation stage before they even reach a Preparation stage. No physical attempts at change are being made but a lot of inner work is being done. Reading here provides tremendous support for that preparatory work being silently done plus people with problems that are socially disparaged, demeaned and mocked will gradually learn that others who share the same situation and home life are full, rounded people (including Byways is important!) who are intelligent, caring, giving, courageous, eloquent... It's easier to change - my own opinion only - when your opinion of yourself increases and you want to make your behavior match that than it is to change from a hitting bottom position - which I know goes against addictions theory but there you are - my 2 cents. A person who feels lower than a snake's belly isn't very aware of any strengths and resources they actually possess.

I just wish to point out that private boards only protect you from the casual snooper. If you think someone is actively spying on you and trying to mess up your life, then all they need to do is register and not post for access to the sensitive boards. So I wouldn't rely too much on privacy to protect you from everyone. (I have one such person in my life.)
I think non-members should not be allowed to post. There are just too many spammers out there, anyway. Besides, many of the members at SS (including me) became genuinely concerned when a poster goes missing from the board. I realize this community will not be exactly the same as the old one, because we will have different moderators. Besides, registering is like crossing a threshhold. It is a sort of tentative commitment to the community.
I would like most if not all of the boards to be readable by lurkers, because it seems that many people do lurk for a while, before joining.
Just my two cents worth.

I'm a little unclear what the various suggestions mean (omg mental clutter, can't decide!) but I can tell you this:
-Open access to the photos on the SS site convinced me you would understand me, and that I am one of you. It also proved to me there is a way out.
-I honestly don't remember trying to read the forums before I registered to use the forums. Now I have to say I'm glad that info "seemed" off limits to me -- and my decision to try this was based on all the open access stuff on the main site.
-I like my privacy. =D

My feeling is that non-registered user (guests) should be able to post to at least one board (forum) to ask technical questions. For example, "I keep getting error messages when I try to join. What am I doing wrong?" and that sort of thing.
As for the photo sections, I believe it is beneficial to have the photos be viewable by the public. It was hard for me to believe that there was anyone else like me for many years. The photos at SS proved I was not alone. People could say whatever they wanted, but those photos proved they really lived the way they said they lived. It was the proof of the sink-pudding, so to speak.
I also believe that ListZilla should be should be readable by the public as well, as it shows the prospective member the kinds of things we do each day to get ourselves out of squalor or to maintain what we have already de-squalored. It helps us learn even if we don't join.
And as far as trolls go, there is nothing from preventing a troll form joining our membership and then start posting their trollish logic or snipes. It sort of comes with the territory. The admins can bannish trolls from the community as needed, which is one of the functions of admins. Of course, sometimes we might think someone is a troll when they simply don't know the proper ediquette, so that needs to be handled on a case- by-case basis.
PS. Vildy, good to see you. I missed you.

I have noticed that a number of members have their email visible, not sure if that is only viewable to members, but still, everyone might want to check and make sure that is how they intend to have it. I wonder if it might even be worthwhile to PM those members to make sure they realize their email is visible? Personally, I never make my email available on any message board, although I do share it from time to time in PMs, unless I have an account specificly set up for that board, just too much potential for problems, .

That's a great point, sleepymom. I wouldn't have my email visible. You can still get messages through the forums if someone wants to contact you privately.
To check/change this:
Go to the top of the page and click "Profile" On the profile page, click "Modify my Profile" Put in your email address Scroll down to "Account Preferences" and the second selection down says "Hide Email" ... change that to Yes. Go to the bottom and click Modify.
Easy peasy.
