In my old job, I was pretty much tied to the phone for 30+ years. I HAD to answer, and I HAD to be nice, polite and professional. This was in addition to massive manual paperwork and computer work with lots of numbers that had to be correct. Since retirement, I rarely call anyone except dial for DH. I don't answer much either, I just look a the caller id and if it's one of DH's buddies, I just pick it up and hand it to him. The less I am on the phone, the more I hate it.
A couple of months ago, I was charged something that should have been paid by my insurance company. I called the insurance company and was immediately on hold for 20 minutes. My nerves couldn't stand it, so I didn't try again, and finally paid the bill. Last week I received an EOB from my insurance company saying they had denied 1. my mammogram charge and 1. an emergency room charge (I had not been to the emergency room. It was over a thousand dollars. I lost it! I knew I would be receiving a bill from the hospital in a few days for both charges. After the last ordeal on the phone, I couldn't face a repeat of being charged for being on hold, so I cleaned up, fluffed my hair and took off to the hospital. The lady was nice but their computers were down. I was still upset, so I swung by a local office of the place I used to work. In talking to a former co-worker, I found out that there was someone there that day that might help me. She had a direct line to my insurance company and together we talked to a live warm body. She straightened out most of the snaffu over the phone, but told me to go back to the hospital and get a piece of paper with my balance, so they would not try to charge me and to go to the doctor's office and tell them I wanted a refund of the payment I made instead of continuing to make phone calls. I did as she suggested, and I will be getting 0 bills and nearly a $50.00 refund this week.
Now if I could only make that phone call to my eye doctor! I've been putting it off for months.

Thanks Lion, I don't know if it was courage; it was more like anger and fear and I'm glad it's over and had a good outcome. I was also very glad that my insurance papers were in a file folder that I could easily find.

I need to call my ds's dermatologist to change an appointment. It's helping to say it out loud, virtually speaking, so I'm going to go get the number and take care of it NOW, gosh darn it!!!

I did it! Not great news-this dr. is in much demand and had to put off appt. 7 weeks. NOT GOOD. I feel like a failure-but I just found out the original appt. is on a day ds's choir is touring local schools all day, and choir is VERY important to him. I did the best I could. No one will die.

I'm bumping up this thread right now. As some of you may know, I have 2 home based businesses, and today I MUST make many very scary phone calls. I have a long list of people to call (some former clients of mine, but mainly clients from the business of a friend of mine, I'll offer them a complimentary service). I need to call these people to try to "sell myself in", and ask if they want an email from me about my services/prices... Maybe recruit some new clients? Everytime I dial a number I'll post one of these regardless of if I got an answer or not, because even the act of just dialing a number skyrockets my anxiety, even without someone picking up the phone!... I'll give myself 60 minutes starting NOW!- I was nervous, but I had "beginner's luck" today! The first guy who answered said yes to an email right away. *still feeling nervous though* - Dialed a number, got the right person on the line, he said call back tomorrow. - Dialed a number, got the right guy on the line, I think I disturbed him, but he said yes to me calling again tomorrow... - Dialed a number, was asked to call back on Monday Ok, so I only did 4 calls... Shall do a lot more tomorrow!

Today is the day...at least to get a start on things.
Thank you.

Hello everyone. I plan to do the same today as yesterday; aim to make many very scary phone calls for my home based business. I have a long list of people to call (some former clients of mine, but mainly clients from the business of a friend of mine, I'll offer them a complimentary service). Again, I'll ask if they want an email from me about my services and prices... Like I wrote yesterday: Everytime I dial a number I'll post one of these regardless of if I got an answer or not, because even the act of just dialing a number skyrockets my anxiety, even without someone picking up the phone!... It's now 12.50 in my country, and I'll work untill 15.20, so 2.5 hours... But I'll take breaks too and I'll also use some time to do online research on the businesses I'm calling!... *10 minutes research* Dialed a number. Had quite a long call, the guy wanted an email from me , but the call did not go amazing, I was a bit nervous... *15 minutes - called a friend just to feel a bit less anxious* Dialed a number, secretary said call back later Dialed a number, secretary said call back later Dialed a number, it did not go great, but he said "yes" to an email. *snack break* Dialed a number, no answer, so that was easy... Dialed a number, no answer Dialed a number, talked with secretary. Dialed a number, finally talked with a friendly guy! He really wanted an email from me too Dialed a number, talked to the right guy, he wanted an email too. Update: So now it's 15.25 o'clock, and I only called 9 phone numbers, which is not great, but still not horrible. I must really really do a better job next week though! My goal is to be able to send 50 emails to 50 new "potential clients". So far I've sent 16, so 34 to go...

Hello everyone. Again, time to do the same I did Thursday and Friday; aim to make phone calls for my home based business and ask if people wants an email about my prices/services. Every time I dial a number I'll post one of these regardless of if I got an answer or not, because even the act of just dialing a number causes me anxiety... It's now 2.20 pm in my country, and I'll work untill 3.20, so 1 hour. Dialed a number, no answer Dialed a number, no answer Dialed a number, manager not present Dialed a number, talked to the right guy, and he wanted an email. One of the first I called today phoned me up, and and he wanted an email. Dialed a number, secretary said call back tomorrow. Dialed a number.
