I keep telling myself, "One chore a day is better than no chores a day.". I've been sticking to that idea for the past week, and you'd be surprised how much I'd gotten accomplished. My mountain of laundry isn't even a hill anymore. My dishes are caught up. My floors are actually vacuumed *gasp*. The reason is that like it's been said hundreds of times on this forum, motivation follows action. Smelling my nice clean laundry and felling the soft dryer warm clothes made me want to do more than one chore a day. And, even if it didn't, I still accomplished one thing that day, which really is better than no things. I'm also giving myself amnesty from my mother's voice. I haven't seen her in nearly two years, but I can still remember her waiting until dishes piled to the ceiling and then expecting my sister and I to get them done in an hour, while three of my four brothers made a game of dirtying up as many dishes as possible. My parents were hoarders, so we had plenty of dishes. I don't have to have the water scalding hot anymore. I don't have to clean the same type of dishes in the sink anymore. I can only do part of a load if I want to. Mom isn't here anymore. This is my house and my life, and I'll clean it as I see fit.

Amazing what just a little bit here and there can add up to isn't it? Amazing how getting one thing done makes us want to do more! Amazing how ignoring the 'should/haveto/oughtas' leads to more can/did/willdos! You are doing great.

I wish there was, in the very least a like button.
Great job, I'm glad that you have been able to get going and keep going on with this. how true it is, that one thing is better than nothing.

Way to go!! I have been working on a list but have had a bad case of the blahs....and have done very little in the past few days....so today I am just working on the kitchen. If I get that taken care of, I can almost be back to where I left off.

Good job! It's also amazing how you can start by thinking you'll just do a little bit then stop...and then the time slips by and the job is done, almost painlessly! I love it when that happens.

This is an exellent consept, one chore a day keep the chaos away (or at least at bay!) I have used this when I was badly depressed and with very low energy levels. Some days I washed a sinkful of dishes (note: not always ALL the dirty dishes, just sinkful), some days I washed a load of laundry, some days I vacuumed... I was able to do mostly only the very basic chores, and often only those kinds that keep accumulating like dirty dishes or laundry, but it kept my home from getting really bad.
Even now that I have more energy and my depression is better, I tend to do one more demanding chore on few days per week and am able to do several easier ones per day. I have shifted this concept into other areas of my life as well, mainly to those areas that are difficult to me like financial stuff. If I finish one difficult/anxiety inducing task on a day, I am very happy with my self that day!

You are doing so great! It is weird how all those memories of what or mothers used to do and say come back, especially around housework. My mom always made a huge production of having the bed made up just so. I don't even own a bedspread, I use a comforter or pretty quilt on top. I will probably never buy a bedspread because of those unpleasant memories.

I'm coming out of lurkdom to tell you how much I've enjoyed your post, best thing I've read in a long time. I tend to let things pile up until I get overwhelmed with the magnitude of the job. thanks for giving me the much needed inspiration this morning to tackle my mud covered, white tile floor. One thing done and out of the way!
