A few weeks back on the SS boards, I posted about self-cleaning cat pans. I found one that looked quite promising: the Cat Genie www.catgenie.com. Anyway, I took the plunge and bought one! It arrived last week, and I just installed it this morning. So far, I am impressed with how easy it was to install. The cats are unimpressed, especially my youngest, George, who decided to come and investigate while I was running a wash cycle to test it out, and got a little traumatized by all the whirring and splashing and funny smells. We're going to spend the next week trying to get used to the new contraption. I really hope it works, as it looks like it may solve my cat litter problems forever. Fingers crossed, and I shall keep everyone updated! ~Mouse

Mouse,
Looking forward to the updates!
I don't think Cat Genie is big enough for our cat, but maybe they will make a larger model if enough people ask. It sure looks promising!

onwardandupward, I have very big cats. The biggest one, Pan-Pan, weighs nearly eighteen pounds. I checked, and he fits nicely into the Cat Genie (although whether he'll use it or not is another story entirely). Unless your cat is a 22-pound Maine Coon (and I know they exist), you should be fine. I will definitely let you know how it goes. ~Mouse

Oh, I'm very interested to see how this works for you! I've been reading about it since seeing you mention it on the old board but haven't taken the plunge. I want to bring it up to DH once he gets back from deployment and see what he thinks.
I've tried the litter maid in the past, but one of my cats was terrified of it and wouldn't use it.
How many cats do you have, if you don't mind me asking?

hypatia,
I will definitely let you know how it works out. I have four cats: George, Pan-Pan, Gretzky and Smudge.
Right now George is recovering from the trauma of witnessing the cleaning cycle, and all the others are entirely indifferent. I don't think they've realized what it's for yet. With any luck, they'll figure it out over the course of the week before I leave.
Thanks for the compliment about my avatar! I am quite fond of it myself. I found the image over at Getty Creative, and cropped it and added text. The picture amused me no end.

krazykatlady,
Thanks for the link! How many cats do you have, out of curiosity?
I'm really hoping this works. The cats have never complained about litter switches before, but I think they're confounded by this latest contraption.
We shall see.

What a great idea. Wish there was a machine that cleaned the bottom of a bird cage . Moineau )

My godmother has a good system for her budgie cage: She cuts out a bunch of newspaper pages in the right size ahead of time, and then just slides out the tray once a week and dumps the used paper in the trash/compost bin. Then the new paper goes in, and voila! Your mileage may vary, of course. ~Mouse

Mouse what a simple but clever idea. I have a shelf on the bird cage trolley where I could store paper cut to size. Gee why didn't I think of that before, would probably only take 10 mins to cut up a few months worth.
Thankyou for that tip!

We have 7 cats, so we'd need a few. Hmm.
After the cleaning cycle, were the granules really dry?

I'm interested in hearing how this works out for you and your cats. I hate changing the litter box!

When I was fostering piles of kittens, I heard the suggestion to always leave a poopy in the clean litterbox, so the babies know what it is for. (Otherwise they have a tendency to just play in the kewl sandbox ) Maybe the next time you scoop, you could put a poopy in the CatGenie, like a little sign in kitty-speak?

crazycatlady,
I did exactly that, although so far no one seems excited at all about the kewl sandbox. I am hoping that they will get the hang of it soon.
