I made a typo with my username in chat today. I typed:
onwardandupwawrd a
The "a" followed me to chat. That made me start thinking about chat identity and wondering if I could call myself anything in chat or if it had to be my username...so I tried logging into chat as:
anythinginchat
And I was able to log in with that name....so then I got worried about identity and I tried using:
Angelina Hedgehog
And it let me!! So I immediately told those in chat I was NOT really AH and went back to my right name.
But as you can see, this raises some interesting identity issues. Is it possible to force the chat name to be the same as the username? I can't imagine anyone I know from SS causing problems by using someone else's identity, but I saw it happen years ago in IRC with some pretty ugly consequences.
Thanks!

Yes, this happened while I was in chat. The real AH had just left, too, so that made it even more confusing when we first saw her log back on.
I'll bring it to the other admins and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

i realise this is an old question but am curious about the answer. its nice to know that the person you are chatting too is who you think they are, but it is a little bit of fun we have to alter our own name slightly depending upon our mood or the type of day we had.

We looked into this and discovered that there was nothing we could do about this problem with our present chat set-up. Participants have to be members of our forum, not guests, but they can sign up under any name they like. Upgrading the chat room from our free, but flawed, chat would help, but it WOULD cost us. BecomingClearer started a poll to see if people were interested in supporting it (largely for other reasons), but the more people who are interested in it, the more likely an upgrade is to happen. I suggest voting for it, if you want it.

One of the problems with not being able to change your name, is that when you are chucked out of chat (by a system glitch, or your own internet fault) you often cannot log back in with the same name, because it comes up with "Username already in use". So, we have been able to circumvent this by changing our names slightly, then it will allow us back in. Otherwise we'd have to wait, maybe quite a considerable time, until it timed us out for being idle.

thanks ladies. i like the idea of being able to change our names but just dont like the idea of strangers using our names. as we dont use a password to log in i guess there is no way around this.
