What I was saying was that my 'New' buttons were working correctly. New for threads that had new posts. And none for older threads.
But of course, that is just me, although it appears to be working correctly in the admin account also. Maybe that's because they are admin accounts, though. Something to think about.

Eagle that led to some testing...
My new buttons APPEAR to be working right: they show new for threads that had new posts, and not new for posts that are older (yesterday older, not ancient). That isn't the problem--so must be some view history is working, otherwise the Daylight Saving Time post from over the weekend would say 'new' and it doesn't. I complicated the issue by assuming a possible answer. The issue is that if I click on NEW it takes me to the first post in the thread unless I've been to that thread post migration. So if I click on Still's blog I go to post #1 instead of the newest posts that have been added since I read last on page hundredandsomething. But then, after I've been there, it will work properly. For example I clicked NEW to get to your post, rather than constantly checking the thread for updates.

BUT ... Once you've opened that same thread POSTMIGRATION, then the new button is re-set, and starts working properly on that thread from now on.

I should add that it did occasionally happen to me in the past with threads I hadn't used in a long time, and I'd always assumed it was something that happened after my browser history had been deleted, etc... and didn't consider it a bug per se.
ALSO:
Our creative writing forum has not migrated yet (see link in signature) and I just clicked the 'NEW' button on a member's blog that I hadn't opened in a long time and got his first post as well... BUT the button showed up properly, only when there was a new post from him today. So... same problem, different Pro Boards Forum, no V5 to blame.

I've had same experience in v.4 with on any thread I hadn't opened for a few months. This was true regardless of whether I had deleted browser history or not. I always assumed it wasn't a bug. I assumed that "new" button would go back only so far, or something.

i see that the thread title is now marked "fixed"
But i'm still having the same issue.
I just looked at the blogs menu
And saw a blog whose last page I'd read .... just a few days ago.
I see that the blog menu shows - in right column, that a new post was made to the blog this afternoon, so I click on the "new" button, and it takes me to page one.

Ditto. Saw 'fixed' went to the general board, found a thread I haven't read for a couple of days and clicked 'NEW'. Brought me to the first post on the first page. (Picked a multi page thread to be extra sure.) I know I'd read a couple pages in at least.

It is "fixed" in that if you visit one now, after the conversion, it will remember where you were next time the thread is updated.

It's mostly just a nuisance, and I can totally accept "we're not going to fix this, because going forward the button will work properly" if that is what the answer is. I know you guys are busy with other bugs and glitches. Calling it 'fixed' makes me feel like a crazy person though. I'll just check myself into the internet sanatorium dressed in full pirate regalia...

Oooh, I bet pirate outfits for the avatars are going to make proboards big bucks when people get bored with the freemium offerings...

There is a solution. You can mark all threads on a forum as read as a one-time fix. Thereafter all new posts to those threads will trigger the 'New' button and it will work for you then.
BTW, have you used the 'Participated' function yet? I love it. It's on the top right of the page and looks like this:

What I like about it is that it lists threads in which I participated as well as saying if any of them have new posts. So not just the new ones are listed. I could go back and review a thread that I participated in without having to search for it.

Eagle, For PaperGrace and myself, we can probably figure out where we left off reading. It's a bit of an inconvenience, but we can accept it. It's not all that important. The concern is for others ... as follows: This isn't a big problem for me, since I caught up on all of my bookmarked pages over the weekend. I can be pretty sure that in all but the most prolific threads all I have to do is zoom to the last page and catch up from there. For people who don't log in often though, this could be a pain in the neck.
Was I on page 36 or 48 last time I logged in? Now there are 52 pages?!

PaperGrace, CourageouslyLion SeeksSerenity, it's a pity that the exact location of "where I stopped reading" didn't transfer over, and that the starting point got reset to post 1 for those threads. However, the New feature is working properly: it's bringing you to the first unread post. It's just that it's working on incomplete data in some cases, and it's not providing ideal results for those instances. So fixing this wouldn't be about fixing the "new" button functionality - it would be about having proboards support go back to the v4.5 board, get the data, and apply it to the threads here. And since we've already modified the data (opened threads, read further, closed them), it's likely that that would not be a clean-and-easy process. Technically possible? Yes, most likely, but possibly not worth the effort. And possibly bringing along cleanup of its own. As eagle has mentioned, the search function in v5 is far superior to the search in v4.5. If I know that I last read the Creative Recovery thread in early February, I can go to takeonestepatatime.proboards.com/search , fill in creative recovery for the thread title, then choose a range of dates. Once I get the results, I can scroll through until I find a post that looks familiar, click on it, and be brought to that area of the thread. Is this a workaround? Yes. But it means that if people have any recollection of what they last read in a very long thread (or when they last read it), they should be able to find it without working through dozens of pages. It would be lovely if there were a quick and complete fix for this. In the meantime, though, there are workarounds. Less than ideal, perhaps, but they should help a bit.
