OnTheMend reported here having problems copying and pasting smilies. So I am going to use this thread to do some testing and see if I can duplicate the problem. I don't as yet know what browser or operatiing system OTM uses, so I may not be able to duplicate it at all, but I will see what happens using the browsers and operating systems at my disposal.
Here goes with Firefox 12 on Windows 7 Starter:
(devil face inserted fine from Smilie drop-down)
(bigwave inserted fine from Smilie drop-down)
Next I'll try some from the extended Smilies box:
Okay, all these inserted fine from the extended Smilies box.
Next, I'll go find the copy & paste post and do it from there. I may be doing the test in the wrong browser, though. I don't know what browser OTM uses, and it may be that the problem can only be duplicated in the browser she is using. So I could very well be wasting my time doing this in Firefox. But I will continue and can switch to another browser for the next phase of the testing.
Copy from this post:
Sheep
copied and pasted just fine using the right click of my mouse and the copy image selection, but in Preview all I see is the url, not the smilie.
check box copied and pasted with no difficulty, but in Preview all I see is the url, not the smilie
done check box copied and pasted with no difficulty, but in Preview all I see is the url, not the smilie
So even if OTM is not using Firefox 12 (which I doubt), it appears I may have duplicated the problem as she describes it.
The above testing was in Firefox 12 (which is what I have on my netbook) in Windows 7 starter. I'll test further using my laptop which has Chome 25, FF 16 (I think, or it could be later) and IE9. But first I should try IE 8 on the netbook, because I think it's IE8 I still have on the netbook.

It appears correctly now. The smilies that at first appeared as url's and not similies both in Preview and after posting, are now appearing only as smilies.
And, OH DEAR, I now remember why I stopped using IE at SOS. The lagtime is TOO SLLOOOOOOOWW.
Will test using IE 8 on Windows 7 Starter:
appears correctly from primary smilie drop-down appears correctly from extended smilie drop-down, but got inserted in the wrong place, had to copy & paste it to move it where I wanted it. This methodology would take some getting used to, as it never happens when I use FF. Another reason I stopped using IE for SOS when we moved to v5. Next to copy & paste from Celeste's post here. Nope, the copy function from the mouse button while in that post seems to be broken. I don't know if it ever worked because I stopped using IE for SOS months ago. Neither can I highlight any of the smilies to copy them. But if I quote the post, I can use the ctrl+C buttons to copy & the ctrl+V button to paste and that seems to be working: These seem to work okay if I do the ctrl+C & ctrl+V method from a quoted text in BBCode editor. But not if I try highlighting and copying from the visual (Preview) box. Well, at least they are posting correctly. But the copy & Paste methodology is wacked and just not working as expected in IE8. Again, this test was done using IE8 on Windows 7 Starter (on my netbook).

Thank you, Celeste. I had seen that post a day or two ago and didn't think of it in relation to this issue. Perhaps it is relevent.
I will need to come back to this later. MIL called and we have some family issues to address. Will be back in a couple of hours or so.

Yep. It is gone due to recent changes. Apparently there is some hope we can get it back. Fingers crossed.

NOT entirely good news, I'm sad to report. Looks like we can drag and drop images, not copy/paste.

Okay, we can drag and drop entire thread starters and it will keep MOST of the formatting. That makes me happy.

Trying again. Oh, that's interesting. Now it seem to have fixed some of the smilies, by virtue of using the quote feature??? It's still showing wonky in the original post as I look at it in another tab. Again, another edit. At first it looked like the smilies were fixed when I first looked at them in preview in the above quote, but once posted they were again not posting correctly. Very confusing.
Anyway, here we go. Drag and drop using Chrome 25 on Windows Vista using Preview (aka Visual):
Okay, that's good.
working like a charm
somehow it shortens my text, however. Not sure what that's about.
There must be a hidden template in the original post from which I am dragging the smilie.
ETA: Well, no, the shorted text only appeared to me before posting. It did not appear once posted.

So I guess the operative words here are Preview (or Visual) with drag-and-drop.
The problem of how IE users will be able to use the Extra Smilies is now more complex, since copy & paste no longer works. It will require two browser windows open side-by-side in order to get a smilie to drag'n'drop, since copy/paste no longer works. Not an issue for me, with my laptop's huge screen. But on my netbook, forget about it. The screen is just too small. But then, I quit using IE for SOS long ago. I know others are still using it, however.
