Depends what your floor surface is, but on my elderly linoleum, I use one of those plastic knitted dish scrubbers, you know the sort, brightly cloured, and slightly bouncy, dishsoap and a little water, and old rags. Scrub the dishsoap into the grime with the plastic thingy, and wipe up bubbles and grot in the old rag, toss everything, as usually the scrubby thing is beyond saving. I tend to use a scrubby that's getting past it's best, or is beginning to unravel. I just did under the trash can, it quite changed colour!

I just cleaned the stuck on grease crud around my stove and refridge with boiling water mixed with vinegar and a dollar store like sos pad and a butter knife to get in the cracks with an old rag. No more build up. Finished by moping the kitchen floor and went on to do the dining room floor. I am using your idea of the toothbrush
