10 years ago I moved to a house with a dishwasher. I was SO happy. 6 months ago I moved to a home without a dishwasher and I considered it one of the main downsides of this place. But I've been surprised to discover that I rather enjoy doing the dishes. Living alone, it often took several days to need to run the dishwasher, so my favorite dishes were often in there dirty, just waiting. Now, I can wash things sooner, and I can always use my favorites. I could have written this post. I lived with a dishwasher for 22 years, but not where I live now. I wash by hand. Through the magic of this thread, I've learned to love the daily washing... in my case, twice daily. What has worked for me is the challenge of chasing Arid's 1-year streak of doing the dishes every single day. When I first joined this thread I was enchanted with the idea, and I absolutely had to go for it myself. I'm almost to the 8-month mark. Say, where the heck did Arid go anyway?? Is anybody else here at work on building a streak?

papermoon - Arid pops in from time to time to report - still doing those dishes daily. What impresses me with Arids story - she took time to note how often she regularly washed up (missing one day in 4 on average) and took a look at how that wasn't working. At the same time there was a link to 'don't break the chain' goal setting method of crossing out days on a calendar dedicated to that goal. The goal she set was to wash up that day's dishes, plus one more from the backlog she had boxed up. From time to time she would report a box was empty. Eventually they were all done, and the streak was on

Aw-w-w! Thanks, papermoon. It's nice to be missed!
I've been without computer access for the past several days. All is well at the moment, though.

mythreecats - I think I would like that if I lived alone, though I seem to recall that dishes still piled up a bit. But with a family, and cooking from scratch every night, (and nobody helping), there were just too many dishes. For 20 years, the kitchen was almost never *all* the way clean. Having a dishwasher now feels like a godsend. I've started cooking more, though … and I keep getting behind on the pots and pans. My kitchen isn't bad, but hasn't been 100% done for quite a while. I miss that. I need to get over that hump!

larataylor Yes, I can totally see that. Plus, with a family, you run the dishwasher more often, so my "dishes sit in there dirty" problem would be solved, too.

I had been meaning to clean the stovetop drip pans all week, but the fates decided today would be the day. This morning I made a perfect poached egg and then made the perfect fumble... it fell smack on the hot burner coils, broke apart, and oozed down into the drip pan and further below. Usually I follow the rule of cleaning up spills immediately, but I had to wait and let the burner cool down. So I made another poached egg, more carefully this time. After breakfast, cleanup was surprisingly easy... the egg had hard-cooked on all the surfaces so it was easy to wipe off clean. I took the stovetop apart, cleaned the burners and drip pans plus underneath, and put it all back together. All evidence has been eliminated.
