I acquired nothing today! Hooray!
There have been way too many days of hyper-acquiring; a non-acquisitions day is far more rare than I care to admit.
I need to keep on the one day at a time non-acquisition strategy.

Neighbors down the street moved out this weekend and left some items by their big trash cans waiting for trash pickup later this week. Two nice non rusty tomato cages were in the pile. I picked them up, they will fit compactly in the shed with my other tomato cages for next year. I didn't plant any tomatoes this year, but usually do. I did NOT pick up the boat shaped curio shelf that would just need a little repair, or the box fan, or the swiffer handle or the mop. There is a big plant in a pot in the driveway. Edited to add: I thought about picking it up, but we left on vacation today and I did not! Someone would have had to water it. Of its still there and still Alice when we get back, maybe I will pick it up.

WTG people - on smart acquisitions and on non acquiring! all i acquired this week was some free plums which i processed, and a cd of my local friend's music - she just passed away and i had seen it at the thrift store. thankfully it was still there! i had loaned her my copy years ago to burn more, and never got it back. now she's gone . it's a comfort to have it and hear her lovely voice again. i avoided all yard sales like the plague this weekend, so had a bit of non acquiring success.

I almost acquired a little dog that was running around lost and scared in a store parking lot last nite. The clerk said it had been there all day. As I was trying to catch it it went right up to a little girl and her mom said they would take it. That would've made dog #4 for me so I am thankful for the family of fellow dog lovers who made that pup their own acquisition

wtg ClimbingPyramids for a non- acquiring day! even at home there are always internet temptations, so good for you! you too, cleanbee! i hope the little doggie has a happy life with the new people or that its owner (if a good owner) finds it. i hope if the owner is NOT good to the doggie that he/she never finds it. but at least you didn't have to rescue the poor pup. lucie, that tablecloth sounds pretty! good sensible acquiring on the tomato cages, joyinvirginia! i would've nabbed those too. i fell off the wagon, and ordered an art book from Amazon on a British painter named Patrick Heron whose work i adore. monographs on him are so expensive but i found one on amazon for under $20 - and i bought it sight unseen. hoping... i usually, these days, get art monographs from inter-library loans. i like that because you can get a book for up to 6 weeks. i am actually READING these art books/monographs. i never hardly read the art monographs i have at home. now, a book or two has to go out of the art section bookcase, in order to fit the new one coming.

I forgot to report that I bought a scrub board last week. And Zote soap. Tried it out and I like it!

Last week, I bought a NordicWare microwave popcorn popping bowl from Target for only $9 plus tax. No more wasteful individual bags, no stovetop pan to scrub. The bowl and lid are multi-taskers for mixing and storage, too. I didn't want to pay for a uni-tasking space-hogging electronic gadget made in China. This bowl is made in the USA. It looks like old-fashioned melmac (sp?), cream-colored with tiny speckles. BUT it is melamine-free and BPA-free. Now I can save money by buying in bulk from the organic co-op. Just 9 batches of popcorn and the bowl has paid for itself (compared to buying a box of individual microwave bags). Except when I went shopping at the co-op last week I forgot to buy popping corn. So I don't even know how well it works yet. But the customer reviews on Amazon are good.

I forgot to report that I bought a scrub board last week. And Zote soap. Tried it out and I like it! Sue, have you ever made your own laundry detergent with Zote? I made a batch once, but it didn't seem to get DH's clothes very clean and his white clothes got dingy looking. I don't know what I did wrong.

No, imamess, I've never made my own detergent. I used to use Tide powder for whites, and Era for everything else. Now I'm really pinching pennies, so I use the liquid detergent from the dollar store or from Aldi's. For pretreating, I use a bar of Fels Naptha or Zote. And I always hang my wash out on the clothesline - the sun helps whiten things.

I started making detergent this year! I have found it works very well, and I too was a Tide gal. Someone on line said that Tide makes some of Aldis detergent, and I also use that with good results. The Dollar Store detergents, do not get good reviews, watered down some say. The price of name brand detergents are outrageous.
This recipe or formula is from Brandy at her blog The Prudent Homemaker. She keeps a beautiful home on a very low budget with grace. She has 7 children and is in her late 30s I believe. She also feeds her family on a very low amount, and some of you may find some good recipes there.
I use Yardley Oatmeal Almond soap from the Dollar Tree, as it has a light scent I like. Brandy uses I believe a unscented soap, Dove. I have a grater attachment to my Kitchenaid and use it to grate the soap, as does Brandy. The first time I made it I grated it my hand, and that is doable! I have seen a lot of formulas over the years to make laundry soap, and I trust Brandy.. and good results
Once you buy the initial ingredients, and it is all at the Walmart, this makes many batches for very little per load. I did not figure it out, but pennies.
1 bar of soap grated 1 cup of borax ( Mule Team Borax) 1 cup of Washing soda 1/2 cup of Oxyiclean ( many readers say you can use the Dollar Tree brand, I happen to have a box of the real things so used that)
Mix well and use 2 Tablespoons per load. Keep in a covered container!
I also use Fels Naptha for stain removal. Zote is made and used in Mexico, some claim it is a bit strong or will fade your colors, but I have no experience with that.
Enjoy reading all you are up to.. I have been AWOL a bit, going through some tough times. Hope this helps if you want to try it!

I've been using All Free & Clear for the past several years. Tide made DH break out horribly and I can't stand the scent of most detergents. I use Zest Ocean Spray for showering and handwashing and Basis Unscented for my face. The Basis soap is expensive, but since I only use it on my face a bar will last nearly a year. I have been thinking about making the detergent again. The first time I made it, I used a recipe for liquid and it made nearly 5 gallons, most of it being water (which is the same in liquid detergent at the store). For years and years I used Dreft since everyone in my family was allergic, but it got so expensive I just couldn't buy it anymore.

Fels Naptha, grated, and Borax for me here for the everyday stuff.
For my nicer, cold water clothes, I use a smidge of EcoTree unscented.
Works well enough and is very gentle on those clothes that really only need a freshening.
