As I mentioned before, we have a storage unit we're paying $25 a month for.
Last night hubby decided to clear out the storage closet downstairs (there is one for each apartment in the shared basement). He got a lot of it done before going to bed.
Today he told me go through some boxes, get out what I want, and he'll do the rest. The amount of stuff I salvaged fits into a large shoebox--that's it. I told him, do whatever you want with the other stuff, give it away, toss it out, I don't care.
I was impressed that I could actually walk into our closet! Tonight's the night to set trash out on the curb, so lots of flattened-down boxes are going out tonight! Not only that, but once we get rid of stuff in our storage unit, we should be able to fit the rest into the closet!
My husband's wanting us to pare down and only keep what we NEED. Which is fine with me. We have too much stuff.

Good for you!!! I have some major cleaning out to do myself! I want to clean out the storage room, which is the spare bedroom. Most of it can surely be thrown away. I just haven't gotten around to it, probably because of the stress of deciding what stays and what goes. First, I have some things that MUST be done to prepare for an appraisal so I can refinance, and then I have more to do just to get where I want to be.
Congrats on getting it down to the size of a shoebox! I hope I will do so well!!!

Heheh...you should see the trash lined up along the curb. He flattened the boxes and put them in another box--if someone swipes them we don't care.
Mostly he did this to get our washer and dryer out...he's selling them. When we moved to this apartment in 2001, we couldn't use ours because there's already a shared one in the basement--coin-op.
Getting the washer and dryer out sure freed up a lot of room!
He said there were probably 15 bags of trash that came out of that closet! I salvaged only what I really wanted and said go ahead and toss the rest.
That's a good indicator that I'm coming out of the "but I might want this later" mindset. If it's been in the closet or storage for years, I'm not going to miss it!

Wow way to go, just think of the money you will be saving, 300.00 a year toward something you want or need or just to keep in your pocket.

Oh wow ... and it looks so nice and neat stacked there by the curb. Good luck getting it all pared down.

The closet is no more than 10 feet deep by probably 8 feet high (if that) by 3 or 4 feet wide. Just to give you an idea. Mostly the space was taken up by empty boxes, and boxes ready to collapse filled with junk we were never going to miss. Like I said I took what I wanted and did not hesitate to throw out a bunch of junk. My husband had to go through it because of security issues--old bank statements and things like that need to be shredded. Other than that, out it went. I think our paper shredder was working more than the shredders in DC!

Give my husband credit for that. All I did was salvage what I wanted. I didn't spend a whole lot of time trying to sort through anything.
We sold the washer and dryer today--and the grill that had been sitting in the garage (covered). The apartment is a little bit cluttered, but I felt comfortable enough to let the guy's son into our apartment to play with our son (he's a co-worker of my husband's) while they loaded the things up into the truck.
My husband's mother and sister are coming over tomorrow, but I'm not feeling overwhelmed...just a couple racks of dishes to do, straighten up a little, and we should be fine. I'm going to get some laundry done...since my husband currently has only two pairs of work pants that fit him, I do laundry every 2 days so there is no Mount Washmore.
