What do I save for good, uh, most of my things! The gorgeous silk yarn just waiting for the perfect pattern, the movie I know I would enjoy, waiting for the perfect time to watch it...

BTW, I have been thinking about taking up knitting, after things calm down around here... but after reading about so many yarn crises and hoards... I think I just may stick to cooking only!

Love this thread... I have so many comments running through my head and I can relate to what everyone has posted... but i am dead tired. That is knackered in English ( Eli )... So I am off to bed. But I will be back!

Three bottles of this delicious garlic salad dressing from a small place in Ohio. I was saving them and then they got buried in the back of the pantry. Expired and tossed this weekend.
I had been saving a huge box of party stuff - streamers, shiny sparkly fringy stuff, etc. Gave it to a friend for her daughters graduation and enjoyed it at her party this weekend.
Several suits that I want to get back into.

I became aware how long a notebook had been in my stationery stash when I took it out to (finally!) use it, and found it had a price tag on it in Irish punts. We changed to the euro in 1999! I'm trying to take one box out of the attic or out from under the bed and declutter it every day. Yesterday I took out a box of incense and listed it for sale online. It was leftover stock from a shop I closed... in 1997! I realise neither of these things had expired and both can still be used - but, sheesh! But you are using it now, and that is the important thing. I have 2 notebooks around somewhere that I bought for NaNoWriMo last year, but I've been working on using up the older ones first.

You just have to realize where your weakness lies, and keep yourself under control. I have a set amount of space for knitting/spinning supplies, I also have a rule I must finish a project before I buy any more yarn/fiber.

Once I saved my favourite parfume for so long it changed scent. After that I stopped saving things for later and use them when they are fresh. My mum always saved special food for an occasion, so we always ate it nearly expired ot it got thrown out. I do not want to repeat that.

My grandmother saved clothes, underwear, towels, etc. for 'good' or 'when she had to go to the hospital'. When she passed away, most everything that she had saved like that was thrown out. Living thorough the Great Depression had a profound effect on my grandparents and my parents. I still save things 'because my mother did' or I can hear her telling me 'You can find a use for this' or 'it's too good to throw away' and I really have to think about what I am doing. Sometimes I place the 'thing' I am saving near the trash but not in it and a day or two later I can manage to throw it away. My mother saved every bit of string she found, washed aluminum foil for reuse, repurposed worn out clothes by saving buttons and zippers and using the cloth to make quilts, etc. etc.. It's really a hard habit to break.

I know this is about saving "the good stuff" but I am going to apply this to my crafts and kitchen. Seems like I save something I don't really want to do or like to eat. If I'm not using it now for any other reason than there is only so much you can cook or craft at one time, then out it's going.

Good point turkeyhill sometimes we aren't saving things for a special time, we're just saving them hoping that our tastes will magically change to include them in the future. "I don't like this necklace, but its nice. Maybe someday I'll have an outfit or outing that it is perfect for!"

I am FINALLY beginning to use my 'good' stuff. A 'fer' instance: Past weekend's very ordinary lunch sandwiches for DH and I...I placed on 'real' plates and not the usual paper ones. So, yes, I had to wash them...but, I swear, the food tasted so much better on that plate!
Jewelry, clothes...and all the things everyone has already mentioned...guilty here.
Not anymore. I'm using the 'good' towels. Wearing my better clothes ... well, the ones that fit, anyway.
I'm trying to claw my way to most of my jewelry...which hasn't seen the light of day in years...and I plan to wear something different to work each day.
I have the DVDs 'War Horse' and 'Secretariat'....still in their cellophane wrappers. Is that stupid, or what?! I'm going to actually WATCH them!
I hope we all strive to use and enjoy what we have.
If not now? When??!!

I apparently am saving all my high-heeled shoes, because I certainly have not worn them and yet I don't want to get rid of them.
I definitely don't use a lot of my linens. Tablecloths? I haven't seen the entire top of dining room table in a decade. Lovely old bedspreads that I won't use because of the pets. Many old doilies and things like that because I have no clear surfaces to use them.
I don't use most anything in my kitchen, but that is because of a nonworking stove. However I do have about 15 or 20 platters for the someday when I hope to entertain.
I also have one videotape I have yet to watch, and it is still wrapped in plastic. I bought it and then it got lost in the shuffle. "Lost in Translation" - yes it was truly lost!

Skinny jeans with zippers and buttons. I am well into the Mom jean category and will never again get into jeans that button. Time to toss!!!!!
