If you are one who is still using a computer with the Windows XP operating system and use the chat in this forum please take note. Windows XP is no longer being updated and Oracle who provides java for operating systems also has stopped development for XP. This doesn't mean you're out in the dark. XP users should not update their java to version 8. The latest java that XP users should have and use is Java 7 Update 71. This update version can be found at the following link at Oracle. java.com/en/download/manual_java7.jspAll other users with later Windows operating system can still keep their java up to date. Currently the latest update is Java 8 Update 25.

hi Greg (and Celeste);
would you know if the same thing applies to Mac Snow Leopard OS X - version 10.6.8 - which is probably the last upgrade i can do on this ancient machine? when i try to update my plug-ins it keeps saying don't update java -(this iMac - very old - still have java 6!) but i suspect Macintosh is no longer supporting snow leopard at all.
when i check FF plug-ins it says java is out of date and vulnerable security-wise. it's some kind of applet. now safari is crashing too. ff has always crashed. but more and more i am getting terminal panics which i have to shut down computer, and i get booted off chat on both FF and Safari. or when i open a different browser chat doesn't even appear at all.
any help you can give on that besides advising me to get a new computer and OS? (i've no money for either of those things.) i keep checking my network connections as well but all seems to be ok there with router and radio.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the heads up. I got so excited when I saw this post, thought my issues would be solved by manually reinstalling Java 7, but recent Chrome changes are also keeping me from using chat. I've got it open in Firefox for now.
Chrome Version 42.0.2311.90 m
Is there a fix for this?

The Chrome 42 issue has nothing to do with what type of computer operating system you have. Java won't work in Chrome 42, regardless of your computer. It's an issue with Chrome itself. A completely separate issue. I made a thread for the new Chrome42 Java problem (There's a fix but it's complicated): takeonestepatatime.proboards.com/thread/26120/java-disabled-new-chrome-42

I upgraded to Java 8 yesterday on my Mac running the latest version of Maverick and can no longer get into chat. Mac users, don't do it. Just saying.

I realize this is an XP thread. Do you think I should start another? To answer your question, I use Safari as my browser and just installed Firefox and can't get into chat there, either. In fact, it totally locked up and I had to Force Quit to get out of it.

I upgraded to Java 8 yesterday on my Mac running the latest version of Maverick and can no longer get into chat. Mac users, don't do it. Just saying. We’ve recently been made aware of multiple issues affecting OSX users running the latest version of Java. Apple is aware of the issue as a number of our customers have contacted Apple Support directly. While we’re certain the issue is not with our software, we have yet to find a satisfactory solution to the problem. The issue appears to be intermittent, and the necessary error data needed to determine the problem is not being generated. As neither our application nor the browsers have made any significant recent updates, we suspect the issue lies with the latest version of Java itself. For the time being, our recommended suggestion is to attempt to install Java 7 Update 79 or later manually from www.java.com/en/download/manual_java7.jsp - You may wish to first uninstall the present version of Java you have. Instructions can be found at www.java.com/en/download/help/mac_uninstall_java.xmlIt is our hope that Oracle or Apple will find a permanent solution to this problem in the near future.
