Many members have found that getting a system of regularly washing up transforms their kitchen, and improves their lives. Many of us are the human dish washer.Others are working with their partners and families to get a get a reliable shared responsibility system of keeping up.Some people enjoy having a clear, shiny sink. Some people to fill their dish washer until there is enough in there to run it. Others run it at least daily. All are welcome. If this is an area you would like focus on, jump in and post. Change is possible. You don't need to be "caught up" to post here. Wash a load, or make a start on the first dish. Toss them out if they seem too cruddy to deal with. Wash the things you need, plus another and you are catching up. People have washed up in sinks or bathtubs, in plastic tubs in or away from the dreaded kitchen, or hosed things down in the yard. Use disposable plates and cutlery to stop generating a taller and wider Mt Dishmore if that is what you need to do. The way to get started is to just begin. Clear the sink. Get the sink clean enough to use (or use another place, or a plastic tub to put in the sink to wash up in.) Then Start with a sink full or a load. You have begun. You can flylady's plan to get started by clearing out your sink, and cleaning it ready for use, or whatever method works for you. Many of us would not use the chemicals flylady suggests, but I include the link that may interest some. www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/shine-sink/ Seinfeld's "don't break the chain" method has been a help for some to get started on a long streak of daily effort, recording their effort in a visual way, and that transformed their life. lifehacker.com/281626/jerry-seinfelds-productivity-secretBe careful how you formulate your goal. Washing up daily may be easier to accomplish and be within what you can control, rather than a goal for a empty shiny sink at bed time, and for it to remain empty until morning.. Having a functional sink means things can get washed and rinsed, waste liquids disposed. Food preparation and cooking can become possible again. Your nutrition can improve. Money can be saved when you don't need to purchase prepared meals. There are many SooS members who have begun to change starting with the washing up, and gone on to other areas of their homes, and transforming their whole life. Perhaps they will tell their stories. We cheer each other on along the way. It really does give a boost to see your effort recognised. Okay, I'm in. I might print off a small year planner and do the ticking off thing, though I'll need to work out exactly what will count (and also bear in mind that there may be days where I cannot do a full sink, so will I count washing at least one item? etc)

Welcome aboard shosha. Maybe its just to process one step in the process on those days, or to substitute another job if you are in a place where taking care of dishes isn't your task. Some people wash up in the morning. Think of what would work for you. I read another screed on this where someone would put another symbol if they were away, like V for vacation. or A for away Here My dishes inc dog water bowl are washed tonight.

I am going to jump in again, and I refuse to beat myself up for falling behind on the dishes as usual. I am going to focus on moving forward and making my life better by doing dishes (I know that sounds silly, but clean dishes really do make my life better).

I'm still in. As of yesterday, I have now completed 9 consecutive months of washing the dishes and shining the sink twice a day every day... all thanks to the power of this amazing thread. Onward!

Got 2 sinks full done today. Going to do dinner dishes tonight. Then another sink full tomorrow. It'll probably take me 2 and a half sinks worth to get caught up. That's not counting the stock pots and cast iron. Ah, my poor cast iron. How I abuse thee.

I made sure all dishes were done for the new year. All that was next to sink were three champagne glasses we had sparkling cider in and pot we heated scallops in. Sink was cleaned and I scrubbed outlet for overflow with bleach to get rid of mold.

I am going to jump in again, and I refuse to beat myself up for falling behind on the dishes as usual. I am going to focus on moving forward and making my life better by doing dishes (I know that sounds silly, but clean dishes really do make my life better). We don't find it silly at all, because it is like that for us too. Our lives are better when we have clean dishes, and an associated space to prepare meals. We are here because cleaning those dishes and cooking things takes effort that doesn't automatically come to us, and sometimes its about making the effort when we particularly don't want to. Got 2 sinks full done today. Going to do dinner dishes tonight. Then another sink full tomorrow. It'll probably take me 2 and a half sinks worth to get caught up. That's not counting the stock pots and cast iron. Ah, my poor cast iron. How I abuse thee. Making haste slowly, you will get there. Maybe consider doing one pot as you wash a sink full. I used to use the hose my pots outside to attempt to do the initial water blast clean off. I use paper towel to wipe out the fry pan and make its washing up easier. Someone else might have some ideas on cast iron. I know it needs seasoning, and then the care is easier. For all cooking I know some oils are easier to clean up than others. Coconut and rice bran oil have high smoke points, so don't burn as easily. Olive oil gunks up nonstick cookware. The cooking shows don't tell us that. I just started the second load of the day in the dishwasher. I have another load's worth if dishes stacked in my room. That equils about 3 weeks of neglect. It also means I have WAY TOO MANY dishes and too much silverware if I can go 3 weeks without running out. I recently subscribed to a service called Blue Apron. 3 gourmet meals worth of fresh food delivered weekly with instructions on exactly how to create them. I have only scheduled this weeks and the 3rd week in January for delivery so far. So I have everything I need for a wonderful New years dinner waiting in the fridge and all I need is a clean kitchen. It seems like I have some motivation and reward all lined up... GO ME!

I'm starting the new year with my worst depression day so far this season. I slept most of the day, and don't want to do one thing. I did drag myself up and got some leftovers into the oven and on the stove for dinner.
The DW is empty, and my goal is to get everyone's dinner dishes into it, plus a bit more, and run it.
I've been doing a bit every day, but people just keep asking me to cook! Again and again and again! And all the big things that can't go in the DW pile up. I really want my perfect kitchen back, but a bit every day is better than nothing … at least it's not getting worse.

hang in there larataylor, just keep plodding along, can you use some disposable plates for a few days to help reduce the work? or is buying some takeaway food an option? not sure what your family situation is but would a shared cooking roster help? you deserve to have a bit of a break from the cooking during the holiday season. take care

Hugs larataylor, next time someone wants/asks you to cook, can you suggest they get the dishes done first?
