I was going to do a second poll with all the names, but i'm nixing that idea. This name was by far the leader, and with Squalor busters being the name of another group... our new name is: Stepping out of Squalor (SOS) vote on if you want the TOSAAT on the end, and preferance over take or taking. When I type it at the top of the board, it won't be abbreviated, i just have limited space to type on the polls. thanks for voting!

I like hopeful's suggestion; I think it's important that we stress one step at a time, especially for newbies and lurkers. that's how I got hope; by reading the posts that people recorded and shared their baby steps out of squalor.

I agree: I like Stepping out of Squalor, One Step at a Time. I think it's more direct than the other two, and it gets that concept of gradual progress right out there.

Actually -- I have a whole other suggestion. Anyone else read Salinger when they were a teen? Do you remember "From Esme, With Love and Squalor" ? How 'bout Love and Squalor? Which covers our two themes beautifully, guarantees people who Google the s word will find us -- and is kind of tongue in cheek. HH

I'll be happy with whatever name is picked, b/c I am just so happy to see the new incarnation of the Squalor Survivors group online ... my slight preference is for Stepping out of Squalor just b/c it's got the two S's, like Squalor Survivors did, and is therefore easy to remember. But everyone's suggestions are brilliant!
Thanks for being here, all.

I don't like the "one step" thing. Reminds me of a 12 step group. And I do not want to join one of those. I like it simple...hahaha something the site helped me with

Now that she brings it up, I agree with Reesa that the one step concept seems to indicate a 12-step group. If I were searching for help, I might be wary and look further just because I don't vibe with the basic idea that I am powerless over my problems.

I can't actually change the url of this site. the name change i was refering to was just the name that is displayed at the top of the board, and on your web browser tab. sorry if i didn't make that clear!

I love the new name! And since I've fallen back into squalor, I am so happy pigpen sent me the email, as I hadn't been to the site in quite a few months. Instead I had started accumulating a bunch more clutter. Of course, I didn't think of it as clutter.....! Now, I've stopped accumulating stuff, since my DH announced a couple of months ago that another year of shoveling our driveway would kill him, and he was sick of driving so far to get to town--so he wants to sell the house and move closer in to town! Initially I was upset, but now I'm on board, so this site will be my lifeline. I hope to be able to release some of my stuff, so we can sell our house. DH is doing the hard stuff--outdoor and garage stuff, repairing the barn, remodeling bathrooms, etc. (He retired last year) so I need to work on the clutter everywhere--mostly my stuff!

I like the name- not sure we need to have the phrase- one step at a time-- as long as we are stepping what ever path we take- personally one step at a time did not encourage me to really move very far at a time- where as steppimg keeps me movinng :-)

I agree with Meme. Some people desqualor all at once, others one step at a time, some in baby steps, and some work in large bursts of energy, then slow down for a bit. Each of us is different.
But for all of us, "stepping" is an active motion. An ongoing process of cleaning up.

I like the new name - the fact that it has 'squalor' in the title, which I see both as a tribute to Squalor Survivors and a reminder of where we've come from. "Stepping out" has a forward/positive sounding direction to it, a signpost towards where we're heading, each at our own pace. It doesn't worry me whether 'one step at a time' is part of the title or not, happy to stick with the consensus on this one. Onward!

I guess that I'm not too fond of the step thing either although I like the word squalor (It is so appropriate for my situation) and I really like the SOS.
How about SOS: Strategies for Overcoming Squalor or Support for Overcoming Squalor
