It's definitely a landlord's market here.

Ah, I would LOVE to downsize. Seriously. Or at least move. Before I married Mr. Artax, I'd never lived in one spot for more than a couple of years. Seriously! And my family wasn't even military. After over a decade of non-moving, I now see that those moves were perhaps what kept a lot of my mess manageable, as moving usually requires a massive clean-up. No moving = no massive clean-up. As Mr. Artax said, "Well, perhaps we could pretend that we're moving...?" Best wishes for your transition, --A

Moving sounds like a great idea, good luck with it.

Can't wait to hear how this all works out! It's great that you have a couple of choices now. All sound completely workable.

WOW! I'll look forward to hearing which one you picked (like at the end of House Hunters)!

...one that I'm filling the application out for right now even though it doesn't have a yard. It is near a large park and the downtown area. It's laid out in a straight line, and isn't exactly roomy, but it has lots of funky features that I like. Continuing to downsize/pack. We've been offered this apartment! Unfortunately I've also got a couple of applications out for apartments that DO have yards AND are in walking distance to school... UGH! What to do? What to do? I went for it! I looked at the other ones from the outside and they seemed... off. Like too sterile = not allowed to actually live while living there (anyone remember how mad I was when my current landlord put my flowerpot inside in the hallway because 'the businesses don't want to see things like that' ? Grrrr!). One of them looked great in the photos, but neglected to show the sketchy stairway up to it. Nope. I found a few more likely ones, but got pretty frustrated when I tried to delegate an application to Husband. Too much emotional/mental drain. I'm just taking this one and not thinking about it anymore. Unfortunately it is available RIGHT NOW so I borrowed the first month's rent from my parents. Paying double rent for the month sucks, but it will give me plenty of time to move, and ensures that The Doctor will be eligible to register for Kindergarten at our new address. I'm super excited! I'm freaked out! Pack All The Things! Purge All The Things! Clean All The Things!

Congratulations Papergrace! You'll make it work! I've also paid double rent and the peace of mind was worth it. Not having to pack everything up to time it to move on one single day, and then having to unpack all at once--definitely worth it in the end. How far is it from your present place? Do you have the keys yet? How much cleaning does it need before you can move stuff in? Diane

I really don't think I could organize an on the spot move with this much stuff and the children and Husband working extra hours at his new job even if I wasn't in school, so it seems like a smart choice, even if that's not what I'm hearing from my folks (who haven't rented in almost 40 years). It's only about 10 minutes drive from our current apartment, or 20 by bus. I had keys copied yesterday. It's relatively clean, but not to my standards... so that is what I'd like to tackle today after getting a little bit of homework in. We shall see. I don't need it to be perfect, but we all know that if I don't take care of those few trouble spots that need deep cleaning NOW I definitely won't get to them after the place fills up with furniture. Thanks everyone for the support. I really need it right now.

You've got my support, PaperGrace! You pulled it off! Even with a month to move (mom and dad, this is necessary!!!) it's going to be exhausting. You have so much on your platter. As always. I love that the boys were able to trim down their toys! Can you take just those, plus maybe one for trading out when they want something new? One in, one out. I love that the doctor can go to the kindergarten you want. You did a good job! Perhaps some friends from school will have yards to play in. Meanwhile, the park will do nicely. I love that you have time to do some deep cleaning before moving in because, lord knows, you won't be seeing those baseboards again for a very long time, if ever. I love that husband will have a humane commute. I hope it works well for school, too. And mil! You got her settled? That is going to make a huge difference. Know that I'm here (though I wish I could be there helping) and am following your progress and cheering you madly. There is much love here for you.
