Thank you, Linda. I had heard of this 5S system not too long ago, but whatever I read about it sounded pretty complex at the time. I like the way you set the steps out so clearly. As a newbie here, I'm going to try to work these steps in as I begin my own decluttering. It makes good sense. Like the chart, too.
And Di, thank you for sharing the list you updated for you. I like yours.

peaceandfreedom, I'm glad you found it useful. I think that the way Di customized it for her life is great too. I was trying for a general outline that made sense in my own life and felt it was too good not to share. I'm curious as to how others have adapted it to their needs.

We have a chore wheel that is the only thing to work so far for simply daily maintenance and when I viewed the chart I thought it may work for the household so I just showed it to the kids(adult offspring) and everyone is excited to see how it works for us.

This is a great system _Linda_. Thanks for the descriptions and the chart. I used to be this organized at work, really followed this sort of thing very well. I would love to get to that point here at home someday. Honestly, just reading this description made me less resistant to doing dishes.

I'm glad it helped you, angela. I'm pretty organized at work and hate to work in a chaotic environment. How crazy is it that I live like I do when I'm so obsessed with a clean area at work?

The 5S System that DOES NOT WORK
1. Shuffle. Move stuff from place to place, but never getting rid of anything.
2. Scatter. Toss stuff about, call it "sorting" when all you are doing is making a bigger mess.
3. Secrete. Hiding our squalor wherever we can. When our houses run out of hiding places, we rent storage.
4. Stall. Procrastinate, make excuses.
5. Shame. What we heap on ourselves.

After I read this thread last night, I thought about it a lot and decided to tweak it a bit to fit my own program as I can see it happening so far. So, thought I'd share it here. (Keep in mind, I'm new at this, learning every day, so this may evolve many more times as I progress!) At least, it can be a starting place for now. I just sense that having a step-by-step approach like this is extremely valuable to me, rather than approaching it willy-nilly, hither and yon. Thank you again for this thread & all contributions!
If anyone with more experience can help sharp-shoot this list, that would be very welcome too.
My 5-S System of Maintaining: 8-19-2015 as edited by peaceandfreedom
1. SIFT & SORT . Evaluate each item as I come to it . Purge unnecessary items (donate, discard or move to another area of house) . Decide on general area where items will reside (& make notes so I don’t forget where that is as I continue working!) . Work toward getting things into their assigned places. . Keep on evaluating, eliminating unnecessary/unneeded/unloved items
2. SYSTEMATIC ARRANGEMENT . Set in order, straighten, streamline . Work from temporary staging areas, tackling one area at a time . Try to decide where items will eventually live; revise locations as i learn more . Make it easy to find necessary items . Make new arrangement smooth & easy . Keep working like this on a regular & consistent basis!
3. SYSTEMATIC CLEANING . Clean items as I come to them . Use cleaning as an inspection—look at each item to determine its function & real need (or not) in my current life . Keep work area safe & easy to work in . Don’t just park stuff outside staging areas unless it is there to be put away . Keep work area clean including floor around me
4. STANDARDIZATION . Standardize my methods, & work the best way I know how to right now If it works, keep on doing it; if not, look for a better method . Keep learning! Adopt new ideas gleaned from other sources when i learn about them . Define, form & maintain high standards of housekeeping & home organization . Keep raising my standards; then when/if something does not meet my standards, I do not need it in my life . PEEP: A place for everything, and everything in its right place!
5. SUSTAIN (MAINTENANCE!) . Do daily personal routines faithfully—and first . Defend conquered areas! Maintenance is truly THE MAIN EVENT! . Perform regular audits (look around, put things away, clean up messes right away; ascertain whenever cleaning or repair is needed & follow up) . Keep all things in good working order; repair or discard/replace if not working . Maintain areas already desqualored—before starting to work on another area . Tidy up work area(s) at end of each day

peaceandfreedom, I think you have a wonderful breakdown here. As you said, it's a work in progress and you will adjust it as you need to. One thing that stuck out at me is to "Keep working like this on a regular & consistent basis!" I think that's the only way to reach our goals, no matter what the goal is. I'm so happy to see people taking the general outline I posted and making it their own. I'm very touched that so many people have been helped by it.

You need to thank Di for that one, not me. It came off her revision of the first list.
The more I look at this list, the more I like it. It just make a whole lot of sense!

I love what Di wrote. I'm thinking along the same lines, I need to customize for ME. And the fifth S "sustain" means just about the same thing as maintain. As in maintenance.

Blackswan, I have been there too.

I'm going to use this alongside my 10 minute method. Thank you for sharing it Linda and for refining it Di. I can see this working for me big time
