There are a bunch of them, but potatoes (but not sweet potatoes), eggplant, peppers, tomatoes are the common ones. Apparently people can be sensitive to them. I put tomatoes in the chili, and a little chili powder though.

Oh Lordy....won't my snooty neighbors love me when I start growing potato's in stacked tires...... It makes me want to do it! ohblondie, you can stack up anything to make your tower. You can nail boards together to make wooden frames, which can be painted if you'd like.

How did you know I have a basket of sprouty taters in my basement! ! But you know, in the fall I had put some in pots and put them in the greenhouse and they are growing like mad! Almost ready to harvest, then I will take the rest of the sprouty ones in the basement and replant them. I also have 2 pots of garlic growing well too. I tried to grow some carrots this way but it did not work. Neither did the spinach and lettuce. I think I need to try some sweet taters next.

Hmm, this thread is good timing. Ive had a few potatoes sitting out on the counter. They started sprouting a few days ago. I kept looking at them and wondered if they were still ok to eat and told myself i needed to do something with them. They probably have leaves by now. Im going to go chuck them now. While im at it, i should see if anything else is growing too (apples, carrots, sweet potatoes, squash). angela i hope you got your potatoes out.

Excuse my plant taxonomy side track. Plant tax was one of my favorite classes in college. Nightshade family, official Latin family name, Solanaceae. You might find it interesting to know that Datura of Carlos Castaneda fame and Belladonna also part of this family. There are many plants of economic value in this family. Here's a Wikipedia link if you care to read more about it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SolanaceaeOf course I realize that not everyone is as fascinated with plant family relationships as I am.

Where we are potatoes have been on sale lately. I could get a 10 lb. bag for $1.88. If I buy them by the pound they are .99 lb. or more. Its cheaper to buy a bag and toss half of it than buy them individually. I find that with a lot of stores. If you buy the family pack you can often buy things on sale at a reasonable price but if you only want a small amount you pay a lot more. (One of my gripes.) Tomorrow I'm check to see if my potatoes need to be tossed.

I eat a lot of potatoes but it is rare that I get through a whole bag in a timely manner. Hence, the green potatoes.

BTW, there was a variety of Datura in the yard of a house I formerly rented. It is an attractive shrub with large fragrant flowers. Unfortunately the local druggies and wannabee druggies recognized it as a hallucinogenic plant and were always messing with it. If it were my property I would have removed it. It really is was/is an "attractive nuisance". I read in the paper that teens were showing up at the local ER with, you guessed it, Datura poisoning. I told the landlord. I don't think he had any idea of the reputation of the plant. I don't know if he removed it after I moved out or not. I hope so. Folks won't leave it alone. Here's photo of the flower. You have probably seen it or its close relatives planted in yards.

Hello Angela, Congrats on getting rid of potatoes past their prime. I'll join you with an old bag of potatoes and I'll raise you some old onions that are growing green chives

Unswamping, good job on the potatoes, broccoli, and chard. I tossed a plastic bag of apples my mom gave me, ummm, a very long time ago. I was too scared to look at them. Will try to get my nerve up to look at three sweet potatoes she gave me back before Christmas. I also have a plastic bag of oranges in the fridge--seeing something green through the bag. I'm not sure if it's the spots where they were picked, or mold . . .

Oh, Angela!!!! You have me laughing !!! Back in December I had some red potatoes that had started to sprout. I just didn't feel like dealing with them, and I thought about growing them, so I watched a bunch of youtube videos on growing potatoes in pots indoors. I love to experiment with this type of thing. The sprouts are 2-4 inches long by now. Last weekend I bought a couple of large pots. Yesterday I planted 4 to a pot. We'll see how it goes. (Yes, those pots were an exception I made for my minimalist shopping challenge.) Yes, I probably should have just added those potatoes to the compost bin. dayeanu and ohblondie, I watched the videos about growing potatoes in tire towers back a month or two ago as well. I'm not sure I want to go there. italianlady, usually when they grow potatoes with the toothpicks and a jar of water they use sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes form pretty vines. www.houseplantsforyou.com/how-to-grow-an-old-fashioned-sweet-potato-vine/
