Actually, it was yesterday. I flattened nearly all of my cardboard box collection. Put about half of it into the recycle bin for pickup this week, and the other half is ready to go into the bin for pickup next week. I saved 4 boxes that I can/will actually use to mail things in. Now THere is a now bare corner in the garage!

A wonderful old London Fog coat with hood. It was about mid-thigh length. I've had it about 13 years, and bought it at a thrift shop for $7.50! Have loved that coat--could wear it 2/3 of the year here. It's zipper wore out. I bought a zipper to replace it, but it was so well-made that it would have taken days just to remove the old zipper. It was stitched down extremely well. So, I haven't been able to wear it this winter. Got a new jacket that does the job but I don't like it nearly as well, so just now I said goodbye to the old one and placed it gently in the garbage can. Silly to be so sentimental about something like that, but I am! Couldn't even donate it so someone else could have loved it.

I would have taken out the zipper, or NOT, and maybe sewed a few bits of velcro as 'buttons'... or ready made "frog" closures, or real buttons and loops of sturdy black elastic as button holders. or wear just as is. is there still time to save it back???
I currently own a good quality "car coat" length raincoat the zipper also died in 2008, but it has a button at waist and neck, so I use it like that, I just can't part with it, and it has been a decade too but it rains so much here this coat is ideal!
My abFab favorite sport walking shoes called ' Yankee Lady" ( just LOVED that name) I wore them all l over the planet, Italy, UK, dog walking at home, for years, but I still feel guilty for putting them into trash..
I could have BURIED them on the wilderness property here...and let them decompose there vs some big trash dump over in Redding CA with banana peels and baby diapers soaking them. ... stupid huh? I felt I dishonored them!!!

peaceandfreedom, did the coat go out with the trash yet? If not, could you bring it and the new zipper to a tailor to replace? A pro probably wouldn't have much trouble doing it. The best thing about well-made garments and shoes is that they are meant to last and so making repairs is worth the effort. Apparel nowadays is made to be disposable and that creates lots of problems for the planet. I had a wool cape that I wore for about 18 years. When it finally was too worn out to wear, sometime in the '90s, I tossed it but kept the leather-wrapped buttons (still in my button stash!). I still think of that coat. They don't make anything that well anymore. It's frustrating!

I tend to cut off bits of favorite clothing too..I have the top decorative area of an old black swim suit, the multicolor triangles, like pennants on a ship ( I looked like a ship IN the suit, only the pennants were colorful) It cleverly took attention from the waist & hips up to the neckline!
well I kept that top porting thinking to make a summer dress of top using the same idea. or buttons, or something decorative. I always see old will sweaters made into fancy couch pillows, and kick myself for not saving my favorites!

H2H , after I read your message I retrieved the coat from the garbage can. I decided I would wash it, take it and the new zipper to the alterations gal to see how much it would cost to have her install the new zipper. outfromundah , after that I found your message. So, thank you both (I think!) Will take it to the alteration shop today, didn't have time yesterday. It's been a very long time since I retrieved anything that I had thrown away. At this point I feel neutral about that act; will wait and see what happens next. I did apologize to the coat for tossing it into the trash! Thanks, guys, for understanding and caring. 30 years ago I did toss a really pretty lilac-colored dress and immediately regretted it. I still regret it. It, too, was a favorite. Yet, last fall, I was able to donate/discard almost half my clothing, and it didn't bother me--I just knew it needed to be done so I did it. Aren't we humans strange and complicated beings!? ETA took coat to seamstress. It will cost $20 for her to put zipper in. I think the new zipper cost me about $5. Get it back in a couple of weeks. 🙂

peaceandfreedom yes we are, as I go thru my issues with letting go of 3 dresses from my long ago past, yet am just fine with the 50+ silk clothing I saved..I can see the complexity of it all.
I dont try to understand it, just process it... and you CAN just set the coat to air out, and decide later on cost to redo the zipper. you prolly don't want to feel regret over this coat, it serves you well

Quick and easy .... got rid of a stack of paperwork from kids for last week. Many special art projects from my Kindergartner. He's at school so they took a quick dive into the recycle bin. I did takes pictures of a couple for him. I can not believe how much paper comes home with my kids! I have 3, but really just the 2 of them bring stuff home. Last week I went through a PILE that my husband kept taking from backpacks and tossing on a shelf in the entry way. There were notices of events back to JANUARY.

Stack of old utility bills about 1" thick. Did not need to be shredded.

Bit the bullet and threw....directly to the messy trash bag (shades of peaceandfreedom!) ..2 good full slips (but dingy, circa 80s) one favorite blue nightgown--needed full new elastic for shoulders, not worth doing
I admit to wearing the nightgown few extra years by tying little knots in the fabric at the shoulders, giving me a 'bump' on each. ridiculous. the concept of "I deserve better" escapes me, too frugal.
I now try to imagine that old adage on unclean/holey underwear "What if they saw THAT in an ER?"
yep...

You are all doing well. I have 3 extra boxes taken out and 3 gallon plastic container recycling. Plus very heavy trash. Wish I could do more but maintenance took up 3 hours!!

wow, what great work you all are doing! i tossed a lovely bamboo and wood chair that i could have fixed (rung cracked) but i knew i wouldn't. same for a fantastic lil' portable cd player where one speaker and all the 'highs' kept cutting out. probably just a loose wire but i didn't want to hassle with it. peaceandfreedom, i am so glad you retrieved that London Fog raincoat! that is one thing you would have regretted, and i'm so glad it'll be an easy fix and last you a lot more years. good call! they don't make 'em like that anymore. H2H - on the "bumpy" nightgown, and WTG on all your releases!
