I'll just say that my MacBook, Firefox, and the latest Java are a combo that does not allow me to use chat.
Last time this happened, I had to uninstall Java, look around in the Oracle archive, find Java 7, install...etc.
I remember reading here that there is a non-Java chat that has been available through Proboards. Are there any plans in the works to move our chat room to this newer system?
Chat is so important to me and back in the day, when I first started, there were a lot of people, lots of good challenging, and as a newbie, it was one of the best tools for me to get started on my process.
I'd love to help and support us in moving to a different chat format if that would be of benefit.

angela, I don't know if this would be helpful to you, but when I can't get on Chat via Firefox (because it says I need to install Java, even though it is totally installed and updated), sometimes Internet Explorer will let me in. It's not my preferred browser by any means, but there are a couple of things it lets me do when Firefox will not.

Beginning with Firefox 52 (released March 2017), the Java plug-in will not work in Firefox. Firefox doesn't allow it.
The problem with using an older version of Firefox ...is that older versions will have security flaws.
For Windows users on a desktop computer, Java now works only in Internet Explorer.
For Mac users on a desktop computer, Java works in Safari.
I don't know what the Java options are for mobile devices (phones/tablets/etc) I think it varies by manufacturer as well as by software.

Lion, I have a Mac and Java is not working for me right now either. I am locked out of chat too.

Yeah, I went to using Firefox when the Java applet for chat quit working in my version of Safari. So I guess I will do what I had to previously, uninstall my Java 8, go to Oracle and find the archive version of Java 7, and install that. I am not sure why this issue is making me so cranky. I just wish we could somehow access the Proboards chat that is not Java dependent so more people can use this great feature.

i have java installed but have set the settings so that it has to ask every time i want to access chat. the java doesn't run for anything else. i only use it for chat on my 12 year old imac. i do have an ancient version of safari - no security updates. but i have no problems this way. i also have a desktop, not a phone or tablet - so that may be why things are more stable for me. i hope you can get back onto chat soon!

Whenever I've looked, or hung around waiting there has been nobody in chat all this week to challenge, chat or work along with me.
I have so much that needs doing and am having a difficult week motivation wise so would desperately appreciate some company for challenging or cheering.
Btw, I use chat on my iPad, doesn't seem to work on the Mac (not a problem if it works on the iPad), but on my iPhone I can't even see an option for chat, is it hidden somewhere?!!

Now that Firefox and Chrome have both gotten rid of Java compatibility (Chrome ages ago and Firefox with a recent update), I can't access chat at all. Edge also eliminated it, apparently. Even before then, though, chat was kinda dying out. Often I was the only one in there or one of two. I switched to the Weekday Work-along thread when I was gung-ho, but lately I've fallen off the bandwagon and have been trying other avenues.

I was wondering what was going on with chat. Every time I thought about logging into it, it seemed that no one was there. Is it because of Java's compatibility issues? If that's the case, are other chat room options available?

A few people use chatzy.com/SOAR (password is SOAR - All caps). However, there are people there who are not members of this forum. I *think* they may have been members of Squalor Survivors way back when, but I'm not sure. I know a few members here don't feel comfortable with it. Personally, I don't care much for the format, so I only use it when I'm in need of immediate support/accountability. I was in there yesterday and didn't recognize all the members, but there were some I knew from here.

Chat seems to be working for me again even with out the updating of the java. Now I am there alone. Is it just me that it is working for or has everybody stopped checking it since it was down for a while?

TML, I haven't been in chat in a few weeks now. I managed to find an old version of Firefox in my back-ups but it keeps crashing. Personally at this point, I think the forum should just do away with the chat function unless we can move onto the non-Java version that Proboards is offering.

I don't understand Java, Firefox, Chrome etc. I just know Chat has been in transformative for me for learning how to get things done. I use my IPad without too much trouble. I am an inconsistent user, but I have noticed there are fewer users then there used to be. I support using whatever works for people. I gave quite a bit of money earlier this year so we could get our colors back. I suspect the annual fee for the non-Java is kind of high, but I'm just guessing.
I'm sorry you can't get on Angela. I'm always pleased when you are there. I'm going on now, just in case. It was empty last time I checked, but you never know.
I have resorted to chatzy in the past. I don't like it as much as our strange and colorful crew at SOS!

Is it just me that it is working for or has everybody stopped checking it since it was down for a while? It works just fine for me on an iPad (not on the Mac or iPhone but I don't need it to work on those if it works on the iPad), but there's just nobody there. I accept that I'm in a different times one to most people, but I seriously would appreciate the company, much to do and now I'm working part time, and the children are about to start school holidays I really need the help more than ever.
