TML , I haven't been in chat in a few weeks now. I managed to find an old version of Firefox in my back-ups but it keeps crashing. Personally at this point, I think the forum should just do away with the chat function unless we can move onto the non-Java version that Proboards is offering. Seems a little unfair on the people for whom it does work and who do use it regularly? |

@angels I can't see doing away with chat even if i have troubles as it can be such a huge benefit for people for whom it is working. We need to work with the moderators and figure this out. The ability we had to come on at any time given the world wide nature of SOOS and meet up for challenges is very powerful and huge. I can recall being in a panic up at 3 am tossing stuff and crying and our UK collegaues were there for support.
I admit i find this all frustrating as heck and i sometimes feel like throwing in the towel on chat but it would be like tossing the baby out with the bathwater. I wish we had some resources to help us with this.

It is now working for me on iphone and ipad except for the cute smilies so that is something and it has to be on the SOOS end as I have not downloaded anything new. It is still empty though.

Hi lesaulerouge and TML...yes, you're right, when it works for people, it works, and that is a lovely thing. TML, I too have had excellent experiences with chat in the past. Our dear seashell coached me through my kitchen a couple of years ago, and I have found much love and friendship there in times since. I am sorry to be so grumbly about it. I guess I just wish more people could and would access chat. I wish I could access chat!! I'll try to rein in my attitude. |

I am encountering issues with Chat and really enjoyed this aspect of the site. Are the mods considering using another chat service since there are so many complaints about it? I hope they do since it is an important part of my use for this site.

I tend to use both these days, whichever one has somebody in it, though tbh most of the time that I want company there is nobody in either 😕 |

I have found I now need to access Chat with Internet Explorer
as it seems FireFox no longer supports JAVA after a certain upgrade.

I am bumping this thread because this has been a thorn in our side for a very long time.
Chat used to be incredibly helpful, an easy way to connect with others immediately when coming to this site. You could usually find someone in Chat at any time of the day or night.
Then some people couldn't use it because of the device or browser they were using. Attendance dropped off, and it was hit and miss whether there would be anyone there at any given time.
Periods, off and on, when Chat was not working at all.
Community members made some attempts at using a thread here, or an outside Chat site, to meet our needs. Neither work quite as well as a functional chat room here, where you have to be a member to enter, and you can see right from the main page how many people are in chat.
Now I have returned after months of not being here, and this is still an issue?
It appears that there is no ongoing effort to address this need, to the frustration of many many people.
What is the hold up? I hate to come back and complain immediately, but - really? Is this ever going to be addressed? Chat should be user-friendly, secure, and available to ALL users. It was once an important and useful feature of this site for so many of us, many who used it daily and depended on that community.
Celeste, Greg, can we please get an update?

as long as (mostly poor, older) people with desktops are then not shut out of the "new IOS friendly" chat, i'm in. Meanwhile, there is chatzy, and @carrie even made a room just for sos members. Here's that link. you're going to have to put your own user name in, in place of mine. i can't get that to erase, probably because i'm using a bookmark - maybe carrie can post a "clean" link without a username? www.chatzy.com/SooS |
