So when I took a shower today, the water turned icy cold on me. I thought it was odd, since I had only run one load of laundry, and that was the night before and on a cold cycle to boot. I didn't think that the minimal amount of warm water I used in the Scooba would be enough to deplete my hot water tank (which doesn't have a huge capacity).
I didn't think much of it until I got to work and received an email from my landlady. Turns out my hot water heater broke today and leaked all over her floor. She had to turn off ALL the water to my apartment, and the repair guy can't come until tomorrow.
This is less than 48 hours before I leave on my trip. My plane leaves Saturday at 16:00. I haven't done the dishes, my floors are only half-washed, and I have at least one (if not two) loads of laundry left to do.
I am home now, and my landlady has managed to restore the cold water to my apartment, which means I can at least brush my teeth and make a cup of tea, but I needed this like a kick in the head. My mother has agreed to let me come by with my laundry tomorrow, and I will take a shower then as well.
Luckily for me, I have very understanding bosses at my new job, and they're letting me off work for at least a few hours, if not longer. This means that I'll be able to do a bunch of cleaning (with cold water), and be on hand when the guy comes to replace the heater (apparently the rental company doesn't repair the thing in situ but just replaces it right away).
Why can't things ever go smoothly, I ask you?

it's always soemthing!
it's good they have the water on for you to at least get cold water.
I wouldn't worry too too much though, about the dishes. They know you don't have hot water so they're probably expecting some unwashed dishes and mess.

- Oh gosh mouse, that's rough. I don't have any helpful words, but I do happen to have a "ran-out-of-hot-water" smiley (it is slow-loading but ... ) Here's wishing that all goes well for you and that you are able to leave on time for your trip! -

Once you're on your trip, you will have a chance to really relax. Hopefully that can help you through the next few days. ((((mouse))))

Why can't things ever go smoothly, I ask you? ~Mouse Mouse, meet Murphy. Mr. Murphy formulated a law that always seems to kick in at times like these.

Dear Mouse -- Maybe you could heat up a pot or two of water on your stove, then pour it into your sink or into a basin? I agree with everyone here that the dishes shouldn't be a major concern this close to your trip, but when you mentioned that you were able to have tea (I'm assuming it's hot tea), I thought, "Well, then maybe there's some way to heat water?"
Messy Binky (whose apartment complex regularly turns off ALL the water in order to repair the ancient plumbing)

yes, that rilly rilly sucks, mouse.
it could have been worse, the water heater could have leaked all over YOUR apartment before your trip!
(not useful info, but something to tell yourself as you freeze your hands in the cold water)

Ah man, that sucks. We were gone for a few days around 4 years ago. Came home to a flooded kitchen. Our water heater at that time was located smack in the middle of the kitchen. It was ancient. It burst. What a mess that was. I agree with the others, get a teapot or something and heat up some water for the dishes. I've considered buying a teapot, but I'm afraid I'll never use it..then I think about things like this. Cold water is no friend of mine
