I'm going to splurge on a hand vac.... maybe a fancy new mop. REXD *chuckle* took me forever to get a new 'mop' ...was in the discount grocery and they had that mop that is one continuous ribbon of cotton looped in a circle...$8.99 they made a movie about the housewife inventor who took her simple mop creation and developed an entire home shopping network of it HSN!! mine may be a knockoff..but it works fine! and the head detaches to wash the dang thing. Movie was 'Joy'... www.hsn.com/products/joy-miracle-mop-with-super-absorbent-bonus-mop-head/8057264now you will have to share which handvac you get... I desperately need to replace my busted up Dustbuster..top fall off since the clasp broke, glued on a strop of tin can metal, lasted a year..now while the motor is still going after 25+ years!!! I have not seen a similar one so long story..but please tell which brand, and I will look it up online to buy. in our rural area few stores, even Sears is closing soon, and Khols has limited selection...

Instead of making wednesday a big day, why cant you spread those chores over multiple days or take one a day? just suggesting. GOOD job on getting the trash and litter out!!! Wednesday and Thursday are my days off so I tried to spread the big chores between them. I may spread things around further though, maybe change the sheet-changing day. Sheet changing is a trial with a cat (he wants to "help"). Vacuuming is also quite a chore but once I get the hand vac I should be able to maintain a bit better and vacuuming won't be so challenging. Speaking of which, need to go do that now, if I can find where I put my purse. (still not good at keeping track of things) The cat is around 8 years old and he's VERY happy. He loves the extra space, his new cat tower, and the sofa. He's made friends with the goggie next door, they chat through the window. Also, Rex is a nickname from my bestie. He calls me that because I have tiny hands like a t-rex.

Ha, I'm going to get the least expensive I can find. I work at a hotel, i'm not made of money . What I want is one of those stick vacuums that break apart into a hand-vac. My sister gave me one ages ago but it got lost in the squalor, so I'm going to try and find one like that. As far as a mop goes, I was thinking of one of the magic-eraser mops. With the cat tracking stuff around (he's a hobby-vomiter too - sorry for the tmi) I get some tough stains on the floor.

Just popping in with a round of applause rexd! Things sound like they are running fairly smoothly right now. Keeping up will be important so it's good that you have a maintenance plan in place.
Happy that you are enjoying now what squalor prevented you from enjoying before.

I still haven't bought the new mop, BUT repairs on this room are finished, except for new pins in the door handles, which the maint guy will handle tomorrow. And I bought the Bissell for any who are interested. I love it already. I came home and vacuumed for the heck of it.

rexd, you are doing great. Good daily and weekly plans, and keeping it up - for yourself!!!! - is wonderful. Good plan on the stick vac that turns into a hand vac. I don't have a cat but I have budgies who drop seeds and little feathers daily. After having lived in a house with 3 levels (including basement) as well as a whole room devoted to 16 budgies, I had 4 of those vacs - 1 for each level and 1 for the bird room. 2 were Bissell, 2 were Shark. I have lived in this apt now, for 3 years and all of those little vacs still work! I keep 1 plugged in in the kitchen all of the time, which only takes seconds to bring out and vac up around the bird cage (or vac the cage tray when I'm cleaning the cage) and the kitchen. But you have to make a point of emptying it regularly. I hope you continue enjoying your place, and I'm impressed that you asked your boss for weekly inspections. That certainly shows good intentions.

Changes in me:
I've noticed that with the change in environment, I've undergone some changes in my behavior/attitude, some good, some so-so.
1. I no longer want to go to work. Before, when I lived in abject squalor, being at work was far less stressful than being at home. I used to dread my days off, when I would have to sit in my horrible environment, on my bed-island, surrounded by garbage. I would spend the entire night either focused on my laptop, or I would turn off all the lights and watch netflix, pretending nothing beyond the edges of my bed existed. Now I enjoy my days off, and I hate going to work
2. I like showering. It's now a pleasant thing to do, and not an ordeal. I no longer have to field an obstacle course to get to the bathroom.
3. I'm more energetic and less depressed. Not that I don't have my bad days. I still do and probably always will, but I've noticed anxiety and depression aren't as prevalent as before. Of course my environment contributed so much to my depression, it's no wonder I'm feeling more invigorated these days.
4. I'm not as itchy. It was probably psychological but I itched all the time in the old room. Especially my eyes, I nearly scratched them out. Of course it may have been a dust allergy or any number of things, but I think anyone's skin would have crawled in that environment. Now, except for a small patch of psoriasis I've had most of my life, and a recurring butt-cheek rash (tmi, sorry) that long predates the squalor, I'm itch-free!
5. I'm no longer afraid to go out in the daytime. Working nights gave me an easy excuse for staying cooped up all day - "I'm sleeping", but I wasn't sleeping - not well anyway. I was hiding. I was terrified of going anywhere during the day because I was afraid someone might enter my room while I was gone. I also didn't want to run into my hateful co-workers. I lived in fear. I still don't want to run into the co-workers, they're an awful bunch, except for the maintenance guy (who brought me a HUGE Thanksgiving plate!), but I'm a lot more comfortable leaving my room in broad daylight. Vampire no more.

That maintenance guy sounds like a true friend. From how kind he was to you when the move was happening and this he really seems like a good person! I know what you mean about the bed becoming an island oasis amid the squalor. It's how we'd been living until recently. I like the way you put it, pretending nothing beyond the bed existed. Feeling more confident and wanting more of a social life are great things! Congrats on finding these wonderful positives and starting the process of learning to rebalance your life.

WTG rexd on recognizing all of the additional bonuses of a clean environment. You have come a long way! And how nice of the maintenance guy to bring you a Thanksgiving plate. He sounds like a great guy, and a nice friend to have. May you soon enjoy more, now that you are getting out.

rexd , what are you doing today besides sleeping and working? Why don't you come and post with us sometimes on the Weekday workalong thread? You can find it in the Squalor Board section. 👍 Be there or be square! 😎

i love reading about your inner and outer changes, rexd! had to laugh about your not wanting to go to work as much - can't help you with that i guess with the mean co-workers, it's not such a joy going to work - but too bad; they are the ones missing out on knowing you, and that you are not the mess that happened before, when you were so ill. you are doing amazing, and the maintenance man sees you for yourself; he sounds like a lovely person. there will be others who see your fine qualities, too. you don't need mean, small people. it's a very good sign that you enjoy being "home" - and how happy your cat is! just one question though: what is a goggie! love the word, and am trying to imagine what sort of creature that might be. besides the weekly workalong thread there is a weekly challenge thread that i like too - but it sounds as though you have made good routines for yourself that are working. using your bissell for the heck of it - BRAVO! and you are going out more! this is all so inspiring and such good things happening; you did this work and you did a fantastic job. keep up the great work and i am so glad you are being good to yourself!

A goggie is a doggie. The new neighbor walks his little dog every morning. I've bought some dog treats for when I run into her. My new neighbors are pretty welcoming. My new room has a history of lots of very loud and shady people, so the neighbors seem glad to have someone quiet down here for a change.
Things are still going pretty well. I keep to my daily routine and I've divided some of the bigger tasks into smaller tasks so they don't seem so daunting. I'm also learning not to procrastinate on anything that can be done in a minute or less (putting a new bin bag in the garbage can, putting a new toilet roll on the holder, etc) My biggest challenges are the bathroom floor (though I did finally buy a mop) and changing the sheets (because the cat likes to "help"). Seems like everything else can be chopped up into smaller tasks which just take a few minutes.
Yesterday my boss came by for pest control and everything was tip-top except for one of the litter mats was less than pristine. Hopefully he won't hold that against me. It's a small thing but it's hard not to feel scrutinized.
Okay I need to find these threads you're referring to. Thanks!
