UPDATE in the year 2013 -- In internet explorer, hitting the escape key will make the emoticons display but they won't be moving around on the page. (They resume dancing when you refresh the page or post a reply or go to a new page). HOWEVER In modern versions firefox nowadays (since April 2013),hitting the escape key no longer stops animations. However, there is a firefox "extension" that you can install easily for free. It is called "Superstop" addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/superstopAfter you have it installed, just hold down the shift key while hitting the escape key, and the animations will freeze wherever they are. (the dancing banana will stay in whatever position she's in.). Then, when you refresh the page, or go to another page, or post a reply, the emoticons will resume dancing -- until you press Shift+Esc again.

I have tried pushing the escape key, and it does not freeze the movement of the animated "smileys". I am using Safari, an older version.
I have not yet found an option in the Profile settings which gives a choice to have all images not displayed.
Is there a way for me to disable the animation "smileys" or the animated cartoon figures which some use?
TIA. :)

This topic is several years old. Hitting the escape key no longer stops animations. Furthermore, the forum layout has changed since then.
You can turn off the smilies by going onto your Profile, clicking the 'Edit Profile' button and selecting the 'Settings' tab. Look for 'Disable smilies' and save the setting. You'll just see text.
You can turn off avatars on the same 'Settings' tab. 'Show Avatars' is the third one down. Click 'No' and save the setting.
At the bottom of posts many members have a standardized signature they've created. This can include smilies and other graphics, photos, tickers, clickable links to other websites, and quotes. This is called a 'Signature'. (My signature is my name and an angel smiley that sticks it's tongue out.) You can also turn off signatures on your 'Settings' tab. It is directly above the 'Show Avatars' option.
Don't forget to save any changes you make to your Profile settings.

Celeste, thanks very much for your post. I have tried disabling the smilies in the settings tab, and it doesn't work. I am wondering if it might be because my version of Safari is too old to accommodate something.
