Hello, I've been trying to figure out why I'm so messy for a long time. It's something that I get down about all the time and perceive as a character flaw. And I always get so overwhelmed by what needs to be done to change, that I freeze entirely. I stumbled upon this forum and the Squalor Survivors website when I decided to search for "squalor" instead of merely "messy."
I am very glad that I am not alone. And I suppose I am even encouraged a bit seeing that my place doesn't look as bad as many of the examples. I also live in a small studio and don't even own that many things. It's mainly a lot of trash and lack of storage for my existing things. I am not as bad as I assumed. However, I still would never let anyone come over. And I discovered the word "sink pudding," because I'm been having plumbing issues, but being afraid of someone coming over and seeing my mess. This causes a chain reaction where I don't do any dishes because I can't use my sink..etc.
I just YouTubed how to just fix a clog myself, and now I'm hoping to have function back of my sink so I can clean dishes. I don't wish this kind of dysfunction on anyone, yet I'm glad to see that there is a community out there for people trying to improve this issue. I hope that accountability and mutual support can help me get better and stay that way!

welcome, zigzagteuszn989! "sink pudding" was one of my favorite phrases as well. Congratulations for looking up how to fix your clog! Dishes are my nemesis and it doesn't take much for them to get out of hand, I have to work on them every day. If I didn't have a housemate who has a pet peeve about dishes in the sink, I don't think I would ever do them. I hope you are able to get things flowing, so to speak!

Welcome! Glad you posted! I'm a big advocate of getting things fixed to make your living situation more functional! so work on the blog and if you can't fix it, then PLEASE call a plumber to fix it. honestly they don't care what things look like, they just want to get to the area that needs work, fix things, then go! I hope you can get some good ideas here that will work for you!

Hello Zigzag and Welcome! I'm so sorry you are having these problems that get you down and keep you from having folks over to your house. This can be very "isolating" but ...You are not alone! I hope you are encouraged in knowing that you house is not the worst one. I believe we can all get into the habit of being neater (myself included )Through simple habits. I have adopted a morning routine that keeps me going and doesn't take me very long: Get up pull covers up. bed made, dishes done, 1 load laundry per day, trash and recycling out, swish n swipe bathroom. (Things that are not in my bare bones routine: dusting, vacuuming, sweeping, mopping)

zigzagteuszn989 - welcome to the forum! A small space can get messy quickly, but can also be cleaned up much more quickly than large or many spaces. So consider that a blessing! Getting your sink functional is imperative! I hope you can do this yourself. I love YouTube! A lot of us get deeply into our own heads trying to figure ourselves out. Nothing wrong with searching for a deeper WHY. But I find it refreshing sometimes to think: this place is messy because I haven't cleaned it. Just look at it in practical terms.
