I live in a 400 sq foot guest house. But it doesn’t matter the size. I’m a slob. My car is a mess. I make a sandwich, leave everything out and go eat. Put it away later. I’ll do anything to avoid the simplest things. Wipe a spot on the floor. Make my bed. It goes on and on. I read and journal a lot. Tons of notebooks and markers. Why is it so hard to move? I do ok at work and it’s physical. ADD maybe. Depression! Working with a counselor. Oh lots of self help books. Love to organize but it’s a mess in no time. Thx for letting me join. Connie

Hello conniechristian It takes time to develop a new habit like ....cleaning-up after you make a sandwich. We have a rule that might help you around here called "leave no trace" meaning you leave the room as good or better than you found it. But around here, rules only apply if they help you, like a tool. The next time you make a sandwich you might forget again to clean up. But the next time you may want to try this rule. It will show you that you can have positive change regardless of age.  |

conniechristian - you've come to the right place! I know how weird it feels when you work really hard at work and can't seem to move at home. What IS that? WHY? Motivation is tricky. One thing we know here is that a tiny action can get it going. Next time, try cleaning up while you're making the sandwich. See how little mess you can leave to clean up later. Make your bed and tell us about it. Forget the big picture and just do one little thing.

Welcome Connie! Check out the forum and you will find lots of ideas from others who are dealing with similar problems. Having a small trash can in every room, and having a routine of emptying every trash can on saturday helps me keep trash under control.
Peter Walsh is a professional organizer and decluttering expert and he has a January challenge. the first thing the past two years, he tells folks to make a note/ sign/ card/ something and write down: "DONT PUT IT DOWN, PUT IT AWAY". Put that somewhere you see it every day as a reminder. Its one way to try and keep ahead of clutter.
