Hallo I have just joined I found you due to searching for help with the mess my house has gotten into.
I thought I must be the only person who finds themselves overwhelmed with trying to keep on top of housework to the point of just giving up. I am relieved to find I am not. I have been living in a house that I am so ashamed of not only will I not have anyone in but I also don`t open my curtains This is not healthy and I know I really need to change. Like many people the situation with Covid has made me revaluate my life, I am in my mid 50`s and have spent the last 10yrs being overwhelmed, depressed, anxious and hating myself over my lack of ability to keep my house clean. So anyway here i am looking forward to getting to know you and looking forward to more positive future.

Welcome! I am also overwhelmed easily, and used to have huge problems keeping my home nice (to put it mildly) but I have learned to keep my home in good enough condition now, and have been able to spread my wings on other areas of my life now, that I don't have to struggle with my home anymore.
You can do this! Keep posting and visiting, and maybe start a blog and maybe join one of the work together threads.

dhalia - Welcome! I'm so glad you found us. This forum is full of empathy and emotional support as well as work threads that make you feel as if friends are helping you in your house. Camaraderie is huge for me. I've struggled with home maintenance throughout my marriage, child rearing, moving, and inheriting a hoard from in-laws. And construction! And cats! Someone here is sure to have knowledge and advice for any particular thing you're facing.

welcome dhalia! you are NOT alone! check out the forums, maybe listzilla, blog section. see what you think might work for you. Thing that helps me the most: trash cans in every room! I have cute plastic ones in the bathrooms, a metal one with batteries that opens with a wave of your hand, a wooden one in the dog's room. and they are lined with nice trash bags, and get emptied every week. Emptying the trash gives me a really good feeling, and usually motivates me to do something else. your home doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to be good enough to make you happy and safe. Clear steps, doors that can open all the way, nothing on the floor you can trip on, appliances functional. Share your particular challenges and you will get great suggestions.

Thank you all for your warm welcome, it is such a relief to be able to talk about how I have let things slide without getting " oh I couldn`t live in an untidy house" I get myself in a state and instead of thinking of what I can do like clean the kitchen floor for example I start worrying about the unit doors, the dirty grouting in the tiles, the mess on the counter etc and become so overwhelmed and panicky about how bad it is I end up doing nothing then hate myself even more! I need to focus on small jobs, get them done and be pleased with what I have achieved rather than look at everything that needs doing. I feel so much more positive today than I have in years!

I hate when people say, I don't have clutter--it makes me crazy. As if it's that simple. It makes me crazy, too! I wouldn't be on this forum if I were comfortable and happy in clutter, squalor, and disrepair. And I relate to what you say about getting so distracted by so many different problems that you're overwhelmed and lose the motivation to start anything.
In fact, I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed today, and I decided to focus on my Essential Tasks, which are litter boxes, dishes, trash, putting things where they belong ... those are at the top of that list. Doing one thing seems to be the magic juice for me.

dhalia This forum has helped me by providing motivation and providing solutions for my particular problems in decluttering and cleaning. I have also learned to laugh at myself, a great stress reliever. I hope it does the same and more for you. Welcome

Welcome Dhalia! You definitely are not the only one that has these issues. I'm so overwhelmed by my house that I want to cry. But, the wonderful people here are great at giving encouragement, suggestions, and even gentle nudges. Remember that your home didn't get in this condition overnight. It will take time to get it clean again. Good Luck!!
