I’m sitting here, just disgusted with myself, in a sty of a house. I don’t know why I do this to myself. I keep myself and my clothes clean, but everything else is a wreck. I’m tired of being so gross. I’m hoping to find ways to get out of this. I have broken things in my house (I rent) that I cannot get fixed because I cannot let anyone in.

Hi Steff. Welcome! It is nice to have you here. You are welcome to join in and/or post wherever you like. I am sorry your situation is so tough. There are many of us here "taking one step at a time" to better our situations. Congrats to you on keeping yourself and your clothes clean. If you are looking for an approach to add to what you are already doing: many of us here have a list of "dailies" we do: "Dinner, dishes, duds" is a basic that can keep the momentum going. I am one of those who finds that getting rid of all obvious trash helps to get on top of the situation and keep going. There are several slogans and sayings here at SooS that have helped many of us get out from under and make progress, such as "Motivation Follows Action." Others will be along here soon with good ideas and support. I wish you success in today in your steps.

Hello steff Welcome to our group. There are a lot of wonderful supportive people in this forum that have been right where you are ... The truth is you do deserve the ability to have the service people in to fix things that break like everyone else. Not to mention sometimes when things aren't working that can compound the mess even further. I would encourage you today to think about what should be fixed and how that would make your life a lot easier. Also, Things don't have to be that tidy for a repair person to be able to come in to a job. The person in just there to do their job correctly and in a timely manner. I would start with the entrance and clear everything out of order on the path from the entrance to said repair job. Start with picking up obvious trash. The places not being repaired can be closed off. I hope this helps . Please let us know how you are doing.

yeah I have wondered why I am like this and have come up with many reasons. its been helpful for me to know as it helps me figure out how to do something different. but the main things for me have been to learn how to do something different! to begin with baby steps, to reflect on what is working, to get support, and to celebrate every victory, big and small!

Hell Steff, just a thought, can the broken items be tackled one room at a time? Start with whatever are closest to the front door, maybe shift stuff into another room while the work's being done.. It's a lifetime of habits we have to change, that's a challenge for all of us

Hi steff and welcome! Will getting those broken things fixed make your daily life easier, make it easier to do maintenance? Then get working on strategies to be able to get them fixed! One strategy: hide the stuff you don't want anyone to see. Maybe box up items and stash everything in one room, so path to item needing fixing is clear. Maybe use sheets as drop cloths over piles of stuff so they are out of sight, explaining you don't want things to get dusty while work is going on. Maybe relocate clutter to suitcases, or trunk of car, or inside cabinets, or wherever works for you. Things do not have to be perfect before you let a worker in! Edited to add: son in law works HVAC. he verified for me, repair people just want to get to item that needs repair, fix it, and go on to next job. Also edited to add: one thing that has always helped me is having several trash cans or bins around the house, AND emptying those cans and taking the trash out of the house every week.

I’m tired of being so gross. I’m hoping to find ways to get out of this. I have broken things in my house (I rent) that I cannot get fixed because I cannot let anyone in. Welcome Steff! Hang in there! Clutter disappears as time progresses. Just start small. Start with clearing just one foot of space. That's how I started. Pick a space that you need room to walk in or need counter space. Keep that area clean and clutter free each and every day and then tackle another foot square next to it. Keeping both clean and clutter free each day and continue adding more one foot square spaces. Then make sure to acknowledge yourself for getting each task done and for continuing to keep it clean. Take a time out to bask in your success! Get on here and tell everyone and gain support. It's a good idea to not look at the big picture or being overwhelmed really sets in. It's tough if you don't have a lot of time, work, or are handling life's issues. That is totally understandable. Analysis of 'why' gets one in deeper depression about the situation. Just starting somewhere makes progress to continue out of squalor. Keep in touch! Much success is headed your way by coming here!
